history

Probably at the beginning of the 14th century, King John of Luxembourg had Kunžvart Castle built to protect the Golden Path . The castle, known as castrum Kungenslen , was first mentioned in 1359 when Charles IV. Pešek von Janovice and his nephew Herbart confirmed the ownership of the Winterberg domain .

In 1672 there was a defeat in the Bärenloch for trade on the Goldener Steig. In 1688, the Dominikal administration Krummau approved the settlement of six more settlers in the Bärenloch. A forest district was established two years later. In 1735 the village received Bärenloch the new name after the savage Castle Kuschwarta or Kunžvart . The Holy Trinity Church and a rectory were built between 1780 and 1781 and were consecrated by Cardinal Leopold Ernst von Firmian . In 1790 the village consisted of 22 houses. In 1833 the still important road from Passau to Prague (today Bundesstrasse 12 (D)) / Nationalstrasse 4 (CZ) was built. In 1840 626 people lived in the 65 houses of Kuschwarda. In 1844 the community was granted market rights for three annual markets.

After the abolition of patrimonial Kuschwarda formed a market town in the judicial district of Winterberg from 1849 , from 1868 it belonged to the Prachatitz district . In 1910 Kuschwarda had grown to 93 houses and had 680 inhabitants, including two Czechs. After the Munich Agreement , Kuschwarda was added to the German Reich and was part of the Prachatitz district until 1945 . After the end of the Second World War, Kunžvart came back to Czechoslovakia , in 1945/46 the German residents were expelled. During the Cold War units of the Pohraniční stráž were stationed in Kunžvart . In 1955 the name was changed to Strážný .

The Church of the Trinity was blown up in 1965 on the instructions of the Department of Building at the ONV (District National Committee) because of dilapidation and the cemetery was leveled. The school set up in the former Hotel Paulik was damaged during the demolition. Only the life-size figure of the Madonna of Lourdes, which was given to the parish church of St. Karl Borromeo in Philippsreut , remained.

Since 2010 the place has the status of a Městys.

traffic

The community is very well connected via the federal road 12 / Silnice I / 4 with the Philippsreut border crossing in the direction of Passau and Prague.

economy

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , an economic life based on border tourism quickly developed . After the Czech Republic joined the EU and the associated duty-free shop , trade in duty-free shops declined, but the gas station near the border , the two casinos and other entertainment establishments continue to enjoy continued popularity, thanks to the Czech Republic's accession to the Schengen Agreement on December 21. December 2007 was reinforced.
