history
The first written mention of Březí comes from 1274. At that time, the noble family z Březí owned the place. Later, the Malovec from Malovice , whose line descended from Vladislav Malovec called itself Vlach Malovec z Březí since the beginning of the 15th century, the Březí rule. In 1468 the Gothic fortress burned down and a Renaissance castle was built in its place, which burned down in 1620. In 1538 King Ferdinand I raised Březí to a market town.
After the Thirty Years War, Karl Leopold Caretto di Millesimo acquired the property. In 1676 he became Freiherr von Wunschwitz, who sold the rule to Gundakar von Dietrichstein in 1680 . At this time, Březí developed into a center for cloth making, whose products were sold as far as Passau and Linz . The place grew to approx. 3000 inhabitants and a Jewish community emerged. In 1858 the Herbersteiners inherited the castle with all its accessories.
In 1868 Vlachovo Březí was promoted to town. In 1948 the von Herberstein family was expropriated. From this time on, the cityscape was impaired by the construction of uniform prefabricated buildings and an oversized school site. In 1968 the place lost its town charter and got it back on October 10, 2006.
