The village was probably founded in the 13th century during the colonization activities of the Vyšehrad Chapter . Wirbicz was first mentioned in writing in 1382. The village belonged to the Přečín manor, which ran one of four farms here. The current place name Vrbice is first recorded in 1554. From 1513 Wilhelm Přech von Čestice and later the Vladiken Kotz von Dobř belonged to the often changing owners of Přečín . In 1685 Ferdinand Franz Leopold Count Wrtba acquired the Přečín estate. He sold it on July 25, 1700 to Ferdinand Prince zu Schwarzenberg . After the death of Prince Joseph II of Schwarzenberg , his son Johann Adolf II inherited him in 1833. In 1840 Wrbitz consisted of 19 houses with 232 residents. There was a manorial farm in the village. The parish was in Watzau . Until the middle of the 19th century, the village was always subject to the allodial estate Přetschin including Dobř and Rohanow.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Vrbice / Wrbitz 1850 a district of the municipality Přečinov in the district administration Strakonice and the judicial district Volyně . Because of the poorly productive agriculture, around a third of the population secured their livelihood through seasonal work abroad. Others worked as circus musicians. In 1910 371 people lived in the 50 houses in Vrbice. In 1912 Vrbice broke away from Přečín and formed its own municipality.

After the Second World War, a volunteer fire brigade was founded in Vrbice; it merged with the Vacover fire brigade in 1972 . On February 1, 1949, the community was assigned to the Okres Vimperk. After the dissolution of the Okres Vimperk, Vrbice became part of the Okres Prachatice on July 1, 1960. In 1964 Vrbice was incorporated into Vacov. After a referendum, the village broke away from Vacov on January 1, 1993 and formed its own municipality.
