Vladike

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vladiken ( Czech Vladyka ) or Lechen also had its own stand of medieval and early modern Czech society. Originally they formed the relatively broad class of free, armed landowners. Vladiken probably already existed at the time of the West Slavic tribes settling in Bohemia and Moravia , but not among the German population who later immigrated to Bohemia.

Since the emergence of the Bohemian monarchy, the vladiks lost their importance, because the actual Czech nobility was formed from lords and knights . Some of the Vladiken rose to knighthood, others sank to unfree peasants. Even in the late Middle Ages , the vladiks remained free and they could have peasant subjects . When it comes to taxation, they formed a separate group. Unlike the actual nobility of the Bohemian countries , they were not entitled to participate in the state parliaments . Elevations in the Vladikenstand also occurred in the 16th century.

The Czech vladiks can be compared with the feudal peasants or free peasants in other territories of the Old Kingdom, who are also distinguished from the mass of the submissive population .
