history

Historic market place

Most of the area around Vimperk was covered in prehistoric times by extensive areas of dense primeval forests. The first efforts to penetrate this were made by Benedictine monks from Windberg , who built the community of Klášterec in 1174 . The monks built further settlements and named them after their former places of residence. One of these was named Windberg. The whole area experienced an upswing with the establishment of a new branch of the famous Goldener Steiges , which from the 13th century led to the market settlement under the castle of Vimperk. The Thirty Years' War and the importation of salt into Bohemia via Budweis meant the end of the Golden Steige and Vimperk and the whole area had to look for new sources of livelihood. The glass industry developed.

In the 15th century, the traveling printer from Passau Johann Alacraw founded the first printing house in Bohemia in Winterberg. He printed Latin, German and Czech incunabula and the first Czech calendar for the year 1485. In 1870 Johann Steinbrener founded printing works there and in 1874 his own publishing house, J. Steinbrener , which still exists today. His prayer books , some of which were luxuriously bound with materials such as leather , tortoiseshell , mother-of-pearl , ivory and snakeskin , were widespread . From 1874 folk, soldiers, teaching and entertainment calendars were published there.

From the 19th century many people were employed in the industrial plants and in the printing works in Vimperk. The city retained its industrial character even in the communist era. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, a number of businesses were closed. Vimperk is currently looking for a new identity and would like to find it mainly in tourism.

Further renovations were carried out around 1600 and in the 18th and 19th centuries. The nave is vaulted with a mesh cross vault. A fragmentary wall painting from the 15th century depicting the 10,000 martyrs can be seen on the north side . The high altar is adorned with a beautiful Madonna from 1410.
