Adalbert Nikolaus Fuchs , also Adalbert Fuchs (born June 5, 1814 on the Wieden near Vienna, † January 7, 1886 in Kritzendorf ) was an Austrian agricultural scientist. He was professor of agriculture at the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute (today: Technical University ) in Vienna , and its rector in 1869/70. He was promoted to Dr. med. et phil. doctorate and was the father of the ophthalmologist Ernst Fuchs .

Life

At the age of 15 he passed the Matura at the Schottengymnasium in Vienna with distinction. While studying medicine, he fell ill with coughing up blood, was taken to Galicia by a friend on his estate and there began to be interested in agriculture. In 1839 he received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Vienna, and in 1843 in philosophy.

In 1844 he was appointed professor of natural history and agriculture at the philosophical college in Tarnów , and in 1849 at the University of Innsbruck . In 1850 he became full professor of agriculture at the Polytechnic in Vienna and soon had to look after the students at the University of Vienna in this function. For the academic year 1869/70 he was elected rector of the Polytechnic Institute. In 1884 he retired as "kk Hofrath".

From 1855 until his death he was the permanent secretary of the "kk Landwirthschaftsgesellschaft" in Vienna. He organized numerous exhibitions, including the one at the World Exhibition in 1873. In this role, Fuchs played a key role in the further development of the Klosterneuburg Viticulture School founded on March 1, 1860 on the initiative of the Agricultural Society (today the Higher Federal Teaching Institute and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing Klosterneuburg, popularly called "pomological"). In 1866 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order for his achievements .
