The railway Strakonice-Volary is a regional railway line in the Czech Republic , originally from the local railway Strakonitz-Winterberg as local railway was built in Strakonice-Volary. It runs from Strakonice (Strakonitz) via Vimperk (Winterberg) to Volary (Wallern) . The Kubova Huť (Kubohütten) station is 995 meters above sea level and is the highest station in the Czech Republic.
According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.
history
The first projects for a railway in the southern Bohemian Forest came from the 1870s. At that time a railway was planned from Liebenau in northern Bohemia to the imperial border near Kuschwarda ("Bohemian Southwest Railway"). However, the financial consequences of the economic crisis of 1873 caused this project to fail.
The concession for the local railway from Strakonitz to Winterberg was granted on April 18, 1892. The route was opened on October 15, 1893. The operation was carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on behalf of the owners. On May 22nd, 1898, the local railway company received the concession to continue the route via Eleonorenhain to Wallern. The line was opened on November 6, 1899 (Eleonorenhain – Wallern) and July 9, 1900 (Winterberg – Eleonorenhain).
In 1908 the Strakonitz – Winterberg local railway merged with the neighboring Wodňan – Prachatitz local railway . From then on, the local railway company operated as the United Böhmerwald-Lokalbahnen .
In 1912 the timetable of the local railway indicated three mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains. They needed about three hours for the 89-kilometer route.
After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in October 1918, management was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). With the nationalization of the local railway company from January 1, 1925, the infrastructure also belonged to the ČSD network.
With the use of modern motorized trains , travel times were significantly shortened at the end of the 1920s. The winter timetable of 1937/38 recorded up to eight pairs of 3rd class passenger trains, most of which operated as motor trains. The travel time on the Strakonice – Volary route was around 2.5 hours.
After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the section between Winterberg and Wallern came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Regensburg . The remainder of the route remaining in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was operated by the Protectorate Railways of Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). In the Reich course book the connection was included as course book route 425y Wallern (Böhmerw) –Winterberg (Böhmerw) . After the end of the Second World War, the route was completely returned to the ČSD.
As an innovation reversed in 1951 with a railcar -run express between Prague and Vimperk , who mastered the route Strakonice Vimperk with two intermediate stops in 39 minutes. A through car drove through from Prague to Volary. This direct train connection between the Czechoslovak capital and the Bohemian Forest was only given up in the 1990s.
On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).
In the 2012 timetable, the route is served by passenger trains every two hours. On weekdays there are further trains between Strakonice and Vimperk.
Since December 10, 2017, the route has been served by low-floor RegioSprinters (series 654) from GW Train Regio . České dráhy tickets are not accepted.
