The district of Prachatitz ( Czech Okresní hejtmanství Prachatice ) was a political district in the Kingdom of Bohemia . The district comprised areas in southern Bohemia in today's Jihočeský kraj ( Okres Prachatice ). The seat of the district administration was the city of Prachatice ( Prachatice ).

The modern, political districts of the Habsburg Monarchy were created in 1868 when the political and judicial administration was separated.

The Prachatitz district was formed in 1868 from the judicial districts of Prachatitz ( Czech soudní okres Prachatice ), Netolitz ( Netolice ) and Winterberg ( Vimperk ).

In 1874, in the area of ​​the Prachatitz district, the judicial district Wallern ( Volary ) was created, which was formed from the communities of the judicial districts Prachatitz, Winterberg and Oberplan . The change took effect on November 3, 1874.

69,811 people lived in the Prachatitz district in 1869, the district comprising an area of ​​18.7 square miles and 87 parishes.

In 1900 the district housed 73,416 people who lived in an area of ​​1094.42 km² or in 105 communities.

In 1910 the Prachatitz district covered an area of ​​1094.42 km² and a population of 74,212 people. Of the inhabitants, 37,742 stated Czech and 36,280 German as their colloquial language, with the Wallern judicial district being almost exclusively German-speaking and the Netolitz judicial district almost exclusively Czech-speaking. The other two judicial districts were mixed-language. In addition, there were 190 people speaking other languages ​​or foreigners living in the district. The district included four judicial districts with a total of 106 communities and 184 cadastral communities.

The area belonged to the newly founded Czechoslovakia since 1918 . In 1939 it was incorporated as the district of Prachatitz into the Bavarian state of the Third Reich . After the end of the Second World War , the area was transferred back to Czechoslovakia in 1945 and has been part of the Czech Republic since 1993 .
