The Sokolov – Klingenthal railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the Buschtěhrad Railway Company (BEB). It runs from Sokolov ( Falkenau / Eger ) through the Zwodautal via Kraslice ( Graslitz ) to the German-Czech border near Klingenthal .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

Prehistory and construction

The line from Falkenau to Graslitz was built by the Buschtěhrad Railway Company (BEB) from 1873 and put into operation on June 1, 1876. The end of this route was today's Kraslice předměstí stop .

On May 5, 1884, a state treaty between Saxony and Austria agreed to continue the route to Klingenthal. The location of the border station was initially disputed. Austria pleaded for Graslitz, Saxony for Klingenthal. Ultimately, the Klingenthal station was used as a changing station between the Kgl Saxon State Railways and the BEB.

The Buschtěhrad Railway was only allowed to build up to the national border. The short stretch to the Klingenthal train station was built by Saxony under its own control and leased to BEB.

Cross-border traffic was started on October 1, 1886.

After the First World War

On January 1, 1923, the Buschtěhrad Railway was nationalized by law and the line was integrated into the network of the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD. At the beginning of the 1930s, railcars began to be used on the line. New additional breakpoints were built, like in Markhausen in 1933 .

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . For the first time, continuous trains now ran between Falkenau and Herlasgrün . In the imperial course book, the connection was now included as a continuous route 171n Herlasgrün – Falkenstein – Klingenthal (Vogtl) –Falkenau.

Because of the war events, the train service on 15./16. Discontinued April 1945.

After the Second World War

After the end of the war, the line came back to the ČSD. The ČSD trains initially ran to Markhausen again (from 1945: Hraničná). Cross-border traffic no longer took place. After the expulsion of the German residents and the subsequent demolition of the village of Markhausen, travel there ceased on May 17, 1951. A dismantling of the track took place later only on the German side. In 1975 the Zwotabrücke in Klingenthal was torn down so that the line was now finally interrupted.

In 1983 the Sokolov – Svatava section was electrified for freight traffic with 25 kV 50 Hz.

It was only after the political change in 1989 that German politicians and the public in particular called for the re-establishment of cross-border connections. At the beginning of the 1990s, the old track, which was now completely overgrown, was exposed again up to the state border. In 1994 and 1995, a railcar commuted between Kraslice and the border near Hraničná, which was mainly used by German day tourists.

In the VIAMONT

As one of the first routes in the Czech Republic, the route was taken over by a private operator of VIAMONT as on May 24, 1998 . This also resumed passenger train traffic up to the state border. In contrast to the Czech Railways, the railway company was also interested in resuming cross-border traffic to Klingenthal. In the spring of 2000, the cross-border section of the route was rebuilt as part of the EgroNet Expo project , although no section block subdivision between Zwotental and Kraslice was planned when the Falkenstein electronic interlocking was set up. This means that no trains can end in Klingenthal. Since 28 May 2000, the trains run Vogtlandbahn in relation Zwickau Center - Kraslice on the state border.

VIAMONT and Vogtlandbahn agreed a far-reaching cooperation in cross-border traffic. In this context, tickets from VIAMONT are valid to Zwotental, day tickets from Vogtlandbahn are valid all the way to Sokolov. The Vogtlandbahn trains between Kraslice and Zwotental are run by Czech drivers. First the travelers had to change trains in Kraslice. Later, through trains were introduced, which continue to run to Karlsbad.

In 2006/2007 cross-border traffic was called into question again for the first time. In view of the fact that there are only limited funds available in the Czech Republic for ordering local transport, the traffic on the Kraslice – Klingenthal section was canceled from Karlovarský kraj when the timetable changed in December 2006 . The reason given was that cross-border traffic was a tourist service and not normal local traffic. However, the Vogtlandbahn was forced to continue to run its trains to Kraslice, as it is not possible to turn the trains in Klingenthal. Since October 1, 2007, the Vogtlandbahn trains have been running through to Sokolov again.

With the outsourcing of rail traffic by the parent company, Viamont Regio (today: GW Train Regio ) took over operations in 2008 .

Vehicle use

VIAMONT used locomotive hauled trains with a ČD class 720 locomotive on the route . A class 810 multiple unit borrowed from ČD was also used in some cases . The Vogtlandbahn used RegioSprinter railcars . Regioshuttle have been operating recently .
