The Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS 1 is a local diesel railcar that is widely used in Germany . The trapezoidal ribbon windows are particularly characteristic. At Deutsche Bahn , the regional shuttles are run as the 650 series . Numerous private railways also use regional shuttles on their routes.

technical features

Originally a product of the manufacturer Adtranz , the RS1 has been produced and sold by Stadler Rail AG since Bombardier Transportation had to sell the location in Berlin-Wilhelmsruh for antitrust reasons when it took over Adtranz in 2001. It is a standard-gauge full -gauge railway vehicle according to the UIC standard, which can withstand longitudinal forces of 1500 kN; it was delivered with a central buffer coupling ( Scharfenberg coupling / BSI compact coupling ) or a conventional European pulling and buffing device . 65% of the vehicle floor is low-floor and designed for a platform height of 55 cm. A special version for 76 cm platforms is in use on the Schönbuchbahn . The railcar is high-floor above the two two-axle bogies at the ends.

Two independent diesel-mechanical drive units made up of a diesel engine and gearbox each drive one of the two frames on both axles. The RS1 is striking because of its construction, which corresponds to that of a truss bridge girder. The window bars are therefore inclined and give it an initially unmistakable appearance, which it now shares with the Bombardier Itino . Operationally, the Regio-Shuttle can be used without restrictions for mainline rail traffic in one-man operation. The relatively small passenger capacity (maximum under 170 people) can be compensated for by the fact that the latest series of regional shuttles can be driven in up to six multiple units. A combination of five RS1s, the maximum of the first series, can then handle a peak load of almost 850 passengers.

In 2006 a Regio-Shuttle was converted at Voith . Among other things, stricter emissions standards should be complied with and the top speed increased to 140 km / h. In July 2009 the Federal Railway Authority ordered the exhaust gas turbochargers of the Regioshuttles to be serviced or replaced strictly at the intervals specified by the manufacturer. Previously, there had been several fires caused by exhaust gas turbochargers that had been in operation for too long. On May 4, 2011, Rhenus Veniro was able to start operating the RS1 on the Hunsrück Railway between Boppard and Emmelshausen . The three railcars were equipped with reinforced spring-loaded and magnetic rail brakes for steep sections with an incline of 60.9 per thousand . In addition, they received an indirect brake as an additional braking system and a reinforced transmission. With a two-year delay, unrestricted approval for all three vehicles was available in January 2012.

The RS1 of the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft mbH (WEG) can not only drive with other RegioShuttlen in multiple control, but are also able to run with multiple units and control cars of the type NE81 (BR 626/926) or be remote-controlled from the control car to become. For this reason, the driving switches of this RS1 have no steps, but have an up-down control.

Orders

In 2006 it looked like production of the Regio-Shuttle would be phased out. In 2007 and 2008, however, further orders followed by ODEG , Hohenzollerische Landesbahn and Rhenus Veniro . With the vehicles ordered, the total number of regional shuttles produced rose to 365. At the end of June 2008, Deutsche Bahn AG signed a framework agreement with Stadler for the delivery of up to 60 regional shuttles, from which, however, no calls were made. In 2009 the Czech railway company České dráhy (ČD) announced the purchase of 33 regional shuttles. This purchase intention was confirmed on April 30, 2010. These trains have been running in the Liberec region (16 units) and the Vysočina region (17 units) since the end of 2011 and 2012 as the 840 and 841 series. On November 7, 2011, the first vehicle was handed over to the Czech State Railways.

In 2009, the transport company agilis , a subsidiary of BeNEX , ordered 38 Regio-Shuttles for the Upper Franconia diesel network, on which it started operations in June 2011 and December 2012. They are officially listed as the BR 650.7 . At the end of December 2009, the contract for the delivery of vehicles for the traffic tender "Netz Stadtbahn" of the VBB for the ODEG was signed. The order included a. the delivery of a one-piece diesel railcar of the type Regio-Shuttle RS1, which started operations on the RB 35 Fürstenwalde (Spree) –Bad Saarow Klinikum at the 2011 timetable change. In 2010 the Rurtalbahn GmbH ordered five regional shuttles, which have been in use since mid-2011 on the Düren – Heimbach , Jülich – Düren and Jülich – Linnich routes.

In July 2010, Stadler received an order from the Strohgäubahn association for the delivery of eight Regio-Shuttle RS1s. Stadler Pankow had thus sold the 450th Regio-Shuttle RS1 vehicle. The vehicles were delivered from the beginning of 2012. Passenger operations by the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft mbH (WEG) began in the first half of 2012. In 2010, the Erfurt Railway ordered RS1s for use on eight railway lines in East Thuringia. 36 vehicles were put into operation from 2012. In July 2011, the Bodensee-Oberschwaben-Bahn announced the order for two more RS1s, which were then delivered in 2012. On February 10, 2012, Vogtlandbahn took over the first of eight new RegioShuttle RS1 railcars from the manufacturer Stadler Pankow GmbH for the "Vogtland Network 2012", which have been in use since December 2012. The Regioshuttles of the Vogtlandbahn are also equipped according to BOStrab , they have indicators, brake lights and low beam.

There have been no railcars in production since 2014, and there have been no orders for these vehicles, and the Regio-Shuttle RS1 has not been offered on Stadler's website since 2016.

Current areas of application

Used by Deutsche Bahn

DB 650 301 in Stuttgart Hbf
DB 650 322 in Radolfzell

In 1999, Deutsche Bahn began putting series 650 vehicles into service. As of June 2005, the DB operated 74 units. They are referred to as 650 001-027, 650 100-122, 650 201-203, and 650 301-321. 650 100–119 and 650 201–203 were financed by the state of Baden-Württemberg . 650001-027 and 650100-122 are identical in construction, 650201-203 (without toilets, for more pitches) and 650301-321 are Radwander vehicles, but otherwise identical to the other Regio shuttles. The vehicles are used from Tübingen and Ulm by the DB subsidiary DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee (RAB). All vehicles have been in daily use since May 2000. Since the end of 2019, the vehicles have been modernized, where the furnishings are being changed, and have been equipped with a relaxation area and WiFi.

Since 2007 there have also been 650 322–327 that are financed by DB Regio Bayern . In addition, the Westfrankenbahn has rented a railcar from Kahlgrund Verkehrs-GmbH , which bears the number 650 997. This car has meanwhile been rented to the Südostbayernbahn and has been used on the Traun-Alz-Bahn between Traunstein and Traunreut since 2008 . The lease between WFB and KVG ended on January 1, 2014 and the vehicle was sold by KVG a little later. Since December 2016 650 319–327 have been running on the Mittelschwabenbahn Günzburg – Krumbach (Schwab) –Mindelheim route.
