The vehicles of the ČD series 840 are low-floor diesel multiple units of the Czech railway company České dráhy (ČD), which have been in use in regional traffic in Liberecký kraj (Liberec region) since December 2011 . They correspond to the Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1, which is widely used and proven in Germany . In contrast to the largely identical ČD series 841, the vehicles are approved for operation on steep stretches. ČD has been marketing the trains as RegioSpider since January 2013 .

history

As early as 2006, the Liberecký kraj, as the authority responsible for local public transport, put out tenders for the transport services on the regional railways in order to improve the quality of local rail transport . This tender was later withdrawn due to its own financial problems and political pressure from ČD. As a result, ČD undertook to provide more modern and more powerful vehicles instead of the multiple units previously used. Particularly problematic in Liberecký kraj is the operation on the Tanvald – Harrachov steep section with slopes of up to 58 ‰, where only vehicles with special steep section approval can run.

In August 2009, the Liberecký kraj put the transport services out to tender again, as ČD continued to drive part of the train services with outdated vehicles contrary to the agreement. The planned transport contract should have a term of 15 years starting in December 2011. The previous operator ČD won this tender with the offer to use Stadler RS1 railcars. Such vehicles had proven themselves in Germany for over 10 years, where they are also used on steep stretches.

Stadler and ČD finally signed the contract for the delivery of 16 cars for Liberecký kraj in April 2010. It was agreed that the new cars would be delivered to ČD within 20 to 29 months. They cost a total of 878 million crowns (approx. 55 million crowns each), of which 300 million crowns are financed through an EU program. On May 6, 2010, ČD presented a borrowed car from the Erfurt Railway in Liberec for the first time .

On January 11, 2011, test drives took place between Tanvald and Kořenov with a borrowed railcar from the agilis railway company . In particular, the freedom of the profile in the rack sections there was checked , as the Abt system rack in the track protrudes into the standard clearance profile . The trips went without complaints.

The first vehicle was handed over to ČD in October 2011. Since December 27, 2011, the new railcars have been in use as scheduled on the L1 line between Liberec and Harrachov.

Constructive features

The variant of the Stadler Regio-Shuttle of the ČD series 840 are equipped with engines from IVECO and hydromechanical transmissions from Voith of the type DIWA D 864.5 with built-in retarders . In addition to the latter, the vehicles have electropneumatic disc brakes , a spring-loaded parking brake and a magnetic rail brake in a bogie.

The railcars have a longitudinal stiffness of 1500 kN. You can drive on changes in inclination with a gradient curve from 500 m.

The opening of the doors is 1300 mm wide.
