Multiple unit of the Breisgau S-Bahn as a double traction in Gundelfingen

The Breisgau-S-Bahn GmbH (BSB) was a regional railway company (EVU), which was founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG (VAG) and the Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (SWEG). Until December 31, 2012, 50 percent of the shares were held by Freiburger Verkehrs AG, which belongs to the city of Freiburg, and Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs AG, which is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg . Since January 1, 2013 and the withdrawal of VAG, 100 percent of the shares have been held by Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft.

The Breisgau-S-Bahn GmbH was merged with the parent company SWEG on December 15, 2017. The SWEG had applied for the continued operation of the routes as part of the Breisgau S-Bahn 2020 after 2019/20 and the network 9b "Freiburg Y" (" Elztalbahn " Freiburg Hbf - Elzach, " Kaiserstuhlbahn " Breisach - Riegel-Malterdingen and " Münstertalbahn " Bad Krozingen - Untermünstertal) won.

history

On January 24, 1996, the Breisgau-S-Bahn GmbH received approval as a railway company. Since June 1, 1997, it has been providing services in local rail passenger transport on the Breisacher Bahn from Freiburg (Breisgau) main station to Breisach . From December 15, 2002, connections were added from Freiburg im Breisgau to Elzach via a section of the Rheintalbahn and on the Elztalbahn .

In 1999 around 1.5 million people used the Breisgau S-Bahn. The number of passengers rose steadily year after year. In 2006, 6.5 million passengers were carried, three years later the figure was 7.28 million and in 2011 7.45 million. This corresponds to an increase of 480 percent within ten years.

In December 2017 Breisgau-S-Bahn GmbH was merged with its parent company SWEG, but Breisgau-S-Bahn was retained as a brand.

The company was involved in the implementation of the local transport concept "Breisgau-S-Bahn 2005", which included S-Bahn-like traffic on its non-electrified routes. This was further developed under the title " Breisgau-S-Bahn 2020 ", for which the Elztalbahn and Breisacher Bahn will be electrified in 2019 and 2020 respectively. While the electrified operation of the Breisgau S-Bahn will be taken over by DB Regio from December 2019 , SWEG will be involved in the Breisgau S-Bahn 2020 with the operation of the Elztal and other routes.

stretch

The infrastructure of the routes used is owned by DB Netz AG and is entirely part of the Freiburg Regional Transport Association (RVF).

The Breisgau-S-Bahn drove or runs to Breisach and Waldkirch on weekdays every half hour , between Waldkirch and Elzach , in the evenings and on weekends every hour. The routes are operated daily from around 5 a.m. to midnight. Electrification work has been underway since 2019, during which a replacement rail service is being carried out.

vehicles

The vehicles used were 21 Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS 1 diesel multiple units, which are based at the Breisgau – Kaiserstuhl transport company of the SWEG in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl . The railcars VT 001 to 009 are vehicles of the manufacturer Adtranz (type: Adtranz Regio-Shuttle RS1) built in 1997/98, the others come from Stadler Rail (type: Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1), VT 010 to 019 built in 2002, VT 020 and 021 built in 2005.

Both construction types have some differences - for example, the Stadler Rail railcar has visual and acoustic information systems. In addition, the Stadler railcars have additional headlights (high beam) below the combined peak and tail signal at the front and rear, which is not the case with the Adtranz railcars But not from Adtranz.

Since 2017, the trains VT 501 to 505 of the SWEG have been regularly used on the Breisgau S-Bahn for reinforcement. From 2020, the Breisgau S-Bahn will be operated with electric trains.
