history
After the discovery of iron ore deposits in the southwestern Ore Mountains, a settlement for the miners and smelters was established in 1543. The place belonged to the Schlick family . In 1628 it was bought by Count Nostitz , who owned it until the patrimonial rule was replaced in 1850. In the beginning, Rothau was extremely remote. With the creation of a road connection, an important trade route from Erfurt and Plauen to Prague led through the town. Since the 17th century Rothau, which had only 18 inhabitants in 1654, developed into one of the most important locations for tinplate production in Europe. The Oberrothau district emerged from the village of Winckelaw, which was founded in 1560.
The bar mill was built in 1861, a plate mill followed in 1880, and a steel mill with Martin furnaces was built in 1889. Eisenwerke AG Rothau-Neudek , founded in 1909 by Erwein von Nostitz-Rieneck , employed more than 1,000 people and produced around 100,000 t of iron per year. The company was also a leader in sheet metal production in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
The Haar settlement was built in the corridors of Oberrothau in the 1920s. In 1925 the town church was built.
The collapse of the company as a result of the global economic crisis in 1931 led to the highest unemployment rate in Czechoslovakia in Rothau and the surrounding area and triggered social unrest. After the Munich Agreement, Rothau was incorporated into the German Empire and belonged to the Graslitz district . During the Second World War the production of weapons took place.
After the end of the war, the industrial facilities were taken over by the Škoda Plzeň works and the Nová Plzeň settlement was built on the corridors of Horní Rotava. Between 1960 and 1990 another settlement was created there with Sídliště. In 1965 Rotava became a town.
