Location of the Okres Sokolov

The Sokolov District ( District Sokolov ) is a district in Karlovarský kraj , Czech Republic. It is located on the southern slope of the Ore Mountains and is a center of lignite mining .

The Okresy are roughly comparable in size to the rural districts in Germany and were dissolved as local authorities on December 31, 2002.

In Okres Sokolov there are around 93,400 people living in 38 municipalities (Obec) with 103 districts (část obcí), it has an area of 754 km².

economy

Mining and industry

The area has always stood out for its abundance of natural resources. Ores were mined in the mountains as early as the Middle Ages, today it is mainly lignite near Sokolov . The production of fuels, mechanical engineering, chemical industry, textile, glass and ceramic production is strongly represented. Open-cast lignite mining reached its peak around the mid-1980s. Most of the deposits have been depleted and production has been falling steadily since then. The mining company "Sokolovská uhelná" based in Sokolov is responsible for the mining and recultivation of the land.

Negative consequences of industrialization

The strong industrialization also led to high pollution of the environment and nature. In the 1980s, with a persistent inversion situation in the winter months, odor nuisance was noticeable as far as Upper Franconia (there referred to as the stink of cat dirt).

Due to the decline in coal production and the improvement of the filter equipment in the technical systems, however, the situation has improved considerably.

Recultivation measures

As early as the end of the 1950s, areas that were freed up were recultivated. In total there are almost 3000 ha, 1100 were released for agricultural use, 1700 ha were afforested. The recultivation of a further 1,800 ha is planned. Areas of water are and have been created. An 18-hole golf course was built in the immediate vicinity of Sokolov.

Employment figures

There are 15 thousand companies registered in the district and the unemployment rate is around 11%. Due to the unfavorable economic development, the investment rate has also been falling for years and is around 1.2 billion crowns.

Agriculture, nature parks and tourism

Agriculture hardly plays a role in this climatically harsh mountain region with forests that take up about half of the area.

In the south of the region there is the Slavkovský les nature park (former military area) and in the north the Ore Mountains as well as 15 protected areas and two other national nature reserves.

Tourism also plays only a subordinate role in the district. Recreational areas can be found in the areas of Kraslice , Bublava and Stříbrná (winter sports areas).

Popular with tourists is the picturesque town of Loket (Elbogen) and increasingly also the community of Chlum Svaté Maří (Maria Kulm), whose pilgrimage church is also being rediscovered by German pilgrims.
