The Zwotental – Klingenthal railway is a branch line in Saxony , which was originally built by the private Chemnitz-Aue-Adorfer railway company . It branches off the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorf railway in Zwotental and leads to Klingenthal in the Zwotatal . There is a connection to the line to Sokolov, which was once built by the Buschtěhrad Railway Company (BEB) .

history

The branch line Zwotental – Klingenthal was planned and built by the Chemnitz-Aue-Adorfer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft at the same time as the main line from Chemnitz to Aue. It was opened on December 24, 1875.

In May 1884 the former main line was downgraded to a branch line .

A connection to the Falkenau / Eger – Graslitz line of the Buschtěhrad Railway, which opened on June 1, 1876, was planned from the outset . However, for a long time it was not possible to agree on the location of the border station with Austria . Only on May 5, 1884 was the cross-border connection sealed with a state treaty. On October 1, 1886, cross-border traffic to Graslitz began.

Klingenthal train station

With the end of the Second World War in May 1945, cross-border traffic was discontinued. Later the track was dismantled to the border and the Zwota bridge in Klingenthal was torn down.

In the mid-1990s, the line as a section of the Zwickau – Klingenthal connection was selected by the Free State of Saxony as a pilot project for the revitalization of a branch line at risk of being closed. In the years 1996/97 a comprehensive renewal of tracks and systems took place. However, due to numerous level crossings, it was not possible to increase the maximum speed. The Klingenthal train station lost almost all of its side tracks during the renovation and has only been an alternative connection point since then .

Since 1997 the line has been operated by the private Vogtland Railway in passenger traffic. Freight traffic has not taken place since the mid-1990s.

In the spring of 2000, the cross-border route section was rebuilt as part of the Egronet Expo project . Since 28 May 2000, the trains run Vogtlandbahn in relation Zwickau center Kraslice on the state border.

The Czech VIAMONT , which is now called GW Train Regio , and the Vogtlandbahn agreed a far-reaching cooperation in cross-border traffic. In this context, tickets from the GW Train Regio to Klingenthal are valid, and day tickets from the Vogtlandbahn are valid continuously to Sokolov or Karlovy Vary. The Vogtlandbahn trains between Kraslice or Sokolov and Zwotental are run by Czech drivers. On the trains that run from Saxony only to Kraslice, the German staff accompanies the train to Kraslice. Initially the travelers had to change trains in Kraslice, today there are continuous trains on the routes Zwickau center – Kraslice or Sokolov or Mehltheuer – Kraslice or Sokolov.

On the Vogtlandbahn lines RB1 with the relation Zwickau – Falkenstein – Klingenthal – Kraslice (–Sokolov) and RB5 with the relation Mehltheuer – Plauen – Falkenstein – Klingenthal – Kraslice (–Sokolov – Karlovy Vary dolní nádraží), railcars of the Type RegioSprinter is used.

In December 2019 there will be a vehicle change on the lines RB1 and RB5 in the Vogtlandbahn network. The old RegioSprinter of the Vogtlandbahn no longer operate in the Vogtland, but are modernized and used on the newly acquired North Bohemian routes.

Route description

course

Starting from Zwotental station on the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorf line, the line to Klingenthal runs south of the station in a south-easterly direction, while the line to Adorf, which today has no regular rail traffic, turns to the south-west. The approximately eight kilometer long railway line to Klingenthal runs completely in the valley of the Zwota . As a border station, the Klingenthal station forms the end of the line. The station, which has now been downgraded to a stop, is connected to the rail network of the Czech Republic with the railway line to Sokolov (Falkenau) . Furthermore, the Klingenthal station was the starting point for the electrically operated narrow-gauge railway from Klingenthal to Sachsenberg to Georgenthal between 1916 and 1964 .

Operating points

Zwotental

Since it opened in 1875 , the station was initially called Zwota , in 1902 it was renamed Zwota Bahnhof and in 1909 it was finally renamed Zwotental . Although the railway to Klingenthal branched off from the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorf line, the station only became an important traffic junction with the opening of the Klingenthal – Untergraslitz border connection in 1886 and the Falkenstein – Muldenberg railway line in 1892.

Today the former Inselbahnhof still fulfills the function of branching off towards Klingenthal, the track systems were reduced to two tracks in the late 1990s. In this station, trains of the Vogtlandbahn cross according to schedule. Therefore, there is a change in personnel between the Vogtlandbahn and GW Train Regio. On December 8, 2012, the scheduled local rail passenger transport on the Zwotental– Adorf (Vogtl) section was canceled by the responsible Vogtland transport association . Since then, only special traffic has existed in the direction of Adorf.

Zwota-Zechenbach

Zwota-Zechenbach stop

The Zwota-Zechenbach stop was opened on May 1, 1909. The waiting hall, built in 1909, was demolished in 2011. Since then, the station has had a modern waiting hall.

Zwota

Zwota stop

The Zwota stop was opened on August 20, 1880 under the name Unterzwota . In 1902 it was renamed Zwota Haltpunkt and in 1909 Zwota . In addition to a modern variant, the wooden waiting hall has been preserved to this day.

Klingenthal

The Klingenthal station was opened on December 24, 1875 as the end of the line from Zwotental. On October 1, 1886, cross-border traffic to the town of Falkenau (today: Sokolov ) in Bohemia began, making the newly opened Klingenthal station a border station . With the opening of the electrically operated narrow-gauge railway Klingenthal – Sachsenberg-Georgenthal , the station also became a gauge changing station in 1916 . The Klingenthal freight yard also opened in the same year. Among other things, there were two trolley pits for the transition from standard-gauge freight cars to the narrow-gauge railway, a track to the goods shed and a hall with a track for the electric locomotives. After the Second World War , cross-border traffic in the direction of Sokolov was discontinued and the trains ended in Klingenthal.

The freight yard was decommissioned in 1963, and the narrow-gauge railway to Sachsenberg-Georgenthal followed a year later . The locomotive shed was demolished in 1967, followed by the freight shed in 2009 and the station building in 2011. Since the late 1990s, Klingenthal station has only been categorized as a stop. It is an interface between bus and train. The station is served by the Vogtlandbahn , which has been in cross-border traffic again since 2000. It has a modern waiting room.
