history
The village was founded around 1580 by the Zittau council on the property of the Waltersdorfer miller. Field names such as Bornwiese and Moor remind us that the new location was created on damp fields. In 1604 Herrenwalde had grown to ten garden foods. After the Thirty Years' War, the village was expanded to include several cottages for Bohemian exiles. In 1782 the Pilzdörfel housing estate was built 300 m south of Herrenwalde on the boundary of the district. The residents lived from linen and twill weaving. Herrenwalde always remained a Zittau council village until the middle of the 19th century and was parish off to Waltersdorf. Since 1951 several of the houses have been used to accommodate vacationers.
Herrenwalde was never independent. The village was a district of Waltersdorf until 2003 and a district of Großschönau until 2004. On January 1, 2004, Herrenwalde was deleted as a district. Since then, Herrenwalde, like Saalendorf , has been represented in the community by the Waltersdorf local council.
