history

Saalendorf was laid out in 1557 by the Zittau council on the eastern part of the Waltersdorfer Flur. The establishment of the village ten years after the Upper Lusatian Pönfall was one of the first village developments supported by the city of Zittau. The place name is derived from the Old High German salaha ( Salweide ). The first settlers were seven sons of Waltersdorfer farmers and gardeners, who bought small meadow plots for 150 and 180 Zittau thaler respectively. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Saalendorf was expanded to include a few more cottages. Saalendorf always remained a Zittau council village until the middle of the 19th century and was parish off to Waltersdorf.

In 1827 the garden food owner and factor Carl Gottlieb Kämmel set up the first two jacquard looms in the Kingdom of Saxony in his house ; the looms from Lyon were a gift from King Anton .

The center of the small town was the Gasthof Saalendorf; it was used as a company holiday home during the GDR era and closed after the fall of the Wall.

Saalendorf was never independent. The village was a district of Waltersdorf until 2003 and a district of Großschönau until 2004. On January 1, 2004, Saalendorf was deleted as a district. Since then, Saalendorf, like Herrenwalde , has been represented in the community by the local council of Waltersdorf.
