Tillyschanz is part of the municipality of Eslarn in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab , Bavaria and border crossing to the Czech Republic .

Geographical location

Tillyschanz is located about 4.5 kilometers east of Eslarn directly on the German-Czech border. The state road 2155 runs from Eslarn by Tillyschanz to the Czech Republic and continues there as a road No. 197 through the border village. Železná (German: Eisendorf) to Bělá nad Radbuzou (German: Weißensulz).

history

In 1611, by order of the Amberg government, ground entrenchments were built to protect against attacks from Bohemia. The general Johann t'Serclaes von Tilly had these border fortifications changed during the Thirty Years' War in 1621. That year Tilly faced the troops of Count Ernst von Mansfeld at Roßhaupt ( Rozvadov ) . With the changes he wanted to secure his flanks. The jumps were oriented more to the west. The name Tillyschanz and the remains of the entrenchments on both sides of the road bear witness to these events.

On March 23, 1913 (Easter), Tillyschanz was listed as part of the Eslarn parish with 3 houses and 19 residents. On December 31, 1990 Tillyschanz had 13 inhabitants and belonged to the parish of Eslarn.

Culture and sights

Parts of the former field fortifications can still be visited today and there are information boards that the Oberpfälzer Waldverein has put up.

The Wallenstein-Tilly-Weg and numerous other hiking trails lead over the Tillyschanz . One route of the Way of St. James comes from Prague via Bělá nad Radbuzou to Tillyschanz, marked as I 24 in the Czech Republic. In Tillyschanz the Franconian Way of St. James joins, which is marked with a white shell on a light blue background. There is an information board on the Camino de Santiago directly at the border crossing. The next town on the Franconian Way of St. James is Eslarn.
