Geographical location

Büchelberg is located around two kilometers north of Eslarn on a sandy plateau at the foot of the 568 m high Geisbühl, which is in front of the 581 m high Büchelberg. In the north of Büchelberg there is an extensive forest area up to the German-Czech border.

The neighboring towns are Zankltrad in the west, Öd in the northwest and Torfhäusl in the northeast .

history

Büchelberg is one of the oldest settlements that arose at the beginning of the 11th century when the area of today's Eslarn was cleared and settled. These oldest settlements are the current districts of Büchelberg, Putzhof, Oberaltmannsrieth, Putzenrieth, Paßenrieth, Gmeinsrieth (originally: Mansenrieth) and Öd (originally: Behaimrieth, which is Böhmer- or Böhmischrieth).

In 1266 the seven farms of Büchelberg were destroyed in a Bohemian raid under Ottokar II . Until 1271, Büchelberg belonged to the Ortenburgers in the Nordgau and was then bought by Duke Ludwig the Strict of Upper Bavaria.

The owner of Büchelberg as part of the estate around Eslarn was Ruger the Punzinger since 1325. In 1329 Büchelberg was separated from Bavaria by the house contract of Pavia and came to the Palatinate in Bavaria (later "Upper Palatinate" and finally "Upper Palatinate") and thus became part of the Electoral Palatinate. In 1383 the Punzinger sold Büchelberg as part of their Eslarner possessions to Albrecht Krätzlein von Neysan (= Neusath), who could not afford the purchase price, so that Büchelberg remained in the possession of the brothers Ruger, Ulrich and Friedrich Punzinger. In 1391 Büchelberg came to the Warbergs, who sold it to Count Palatine Johann von Neunburg in 1424 because of the constant attacks by the Hussites . In this sale, Büchelberg is mentioned with five farms.

In 1441, Count Palatine Johann von Neumarkt lent a farm in Büchelberg to Ulrich the Treswitzer to raise funds.

In the 16th century the nobles of the Stöckl owned the Hofmark Eslarn. They let their cattle, horses, oxen, cows and over 400 sheep graze on the Büchelberg from spring until the first snowfall in autumn. Only the milking cattle were driven in at noon and at night. When Hieronymus Stöckl died in 1588 without male descendants, his property fell back to the Electoral Palatinate and to the Treswitz Care Office. During the Thirty Years' War Büchelberg suffered a lot, especially during the battles between Count Ernst von Mansfeld and the Bavarian Lieutenant General Freiherr Johann Tserklas von Tilly , which took place from 1620 to 1621 in the area of Waidhaus and Eslarn. During these battles the Meierhof am Büchelberg was first plundered by the Pleysteiner Fähnlein under its captain Georg Wolfgang von Wildenstein and then burned with its wooden stables and barns by the Mansfeld soldiers and put in ashes. In 1630 Büchelberg was still deserted. Harvest failures, famine and the plague made the situation even worse for the residents.

As of March 23, 1913 (Easter), Büchelberg was listed as part of the Eslarn parish with five houses and 32 residents. On December 31, 1990, Büchelberg had 13 residents and belonged to the parish of Eslarn.
