When tourism developed in Saxon Switzerland in the 19th century , Schmilka was a popular starting point. Numerous artists and painters, including Casper David Friedrich and Carl Gustav Carus, stopped here on their explorations of nature and drew inspiration from the surrounding rugged rocky landscape. Later the painter's path developed from the paths followed by the painters .

When the road in the Elbe valley was expanded in the 1930s and extended to the nearby Bohemian towns, Schmilka became a border town. On the Czech side is the place Hrensko . Schmilka has been part of Bad Schandau since January 1, 1973 . After the fall of the Wall, many buildings were used by customs and border controls until the early 1990s.
