Malerweg

The Malerweg is divided into eight hiking stages.

The Malerweg is the main hiking trail in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . It got its name because many painters (e.g. Ludwig Richter and Caspar David Friedrich ) and in the past centuries made more or less romantic views of the rock formations.

It runs from the Liebethaler Grund near Pirna , via Lohmen , the Uttewalder Grund, Stadt Wehlen , the Bastei , the health resort Rathen , Hohnstein (Saxon Switzerland) , the Brand , Altendorf, further over the Schrammsteine and Affensteine , the Lichtenhain waterfall , the Neumannmühle to to the Räumichtmühle, where it reaches the easternmost point. From there it continues west via the Zeughaus and the Great Winterberg to Schmilka. In Schmilka the Elbe is crossed and it continues via Schöna , Krippen , the Papststein and the Gohrisch to Königstein , the fortress Königstein , Weißig (Saxon Switzerland) to Pirna. The Malerweg is a total of 112 km long, of which 68 km are on the right Elbe part to Schmilka and 44 km on the left Elbe part.

Ascent to the Gohrisch from the west

The Malerweg is divided into the following stages:

  1. Liebethal to Stadt Wehlen , 11 km
  2. City of Wehlen to Hohnstein , 13 km
  3. Hohnstein to Altendorf, 12 km
  4. Altendorf to Neumannmühle, 18 km
  5. Neumannmühle to Schmilka , 14 km
  6. Schmilka to Gohrisch (Muselweg), 17 km
  7. Gohrisch (Muselweg) to Weißig, 15 km
  8. Weißig to Pirna , 12 km

The first to sixth stages follow the locally verifiable historical Malerweg route, which from the second half of the 18th century to the 20th century largely opened up Saxon Switzerland and a. with names like Adrian Zingg , Anton Graff , Caspar David Friedrich , Johan Christian Dahl , Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter . The Malerweg begins in Liebethaler Grund, which is possibly Dahl's Gorge in Saxon Switzerland . At km 9 the often reproduced Uttewalder Felsentor is hiked through, at km 17 the Neurathener Felsentor, the main motif of Friedrich's Felsenschlucht , near km 65 the Kipphorn view , Friedrich's view of the Elbe valley , and at km 72 at the Kaiserkrone there is the group of rocks on which Friedrichs Hiker stands above the sea of ​​fog .

The seventh stage leads past the Biedermannschen Mausoleum (built in 1923) near Thürmsdorf, which was renovated in 1994/1995 and consecrated as the Malerweg Chapel in 2016 .

Sights on the Malerweg

Stage 1

The Liebethaler Grund is a deeply cut valley of the Wesenitz between Lohmen and Hinterjessen . Many poets and storytellers such as Elisa von der Recke or Hans Christian Andersen described the valley early on.

The Richard Wagner Memorial is the largest of its kind in the world and was built by Richard Guhr in 1933 . It has a height of 12.5 meters.

The Uttewalder Grund is a gorge shaped by bizarre rock formations between the city of Wehlen and Uttewalde.

The castle Wehlen is a partially preserved Spur castle above the Elbe River in the town of Wehlen.

Stage 2

The Steinerner Tisch rest area was commissioned by August the Strong in 1710 on the occasion of a hunt .

The Bastei Bridge is a stone bridge built into the rock in the municipality of Lohmen with a view of the Elbe Valley.

The national park gallery Schweizerhaus at the Berghotel Bastei houses paintings and graphics and offers information on the painter path.

The Rathen rock stage is a natural stage below the bastion, on which various, often musical pieces have been presented to the public since 1936.

The Amselfall is a waterfall north of the bastion, which was recorded by the painter Christian Gottlob Hammer as one of the first motifs on the painter's path.

The Hockstein  is a 291 meter high rock with a view of the Polenz Valley.

The Wolfsschlucht is a narrow staircase and functions as a descent from the Hockstein into the Polenztal.

The Hohnstein Castle occupies a historic building dating back to 1353 and has next to the castle via a castle garden and an outdoor theater.

Stage 3

The fire prospect is about 177 meters above the Polenz and offers a wide view of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It is also known as the “balcony of Saxon Switzerland”.

The Sebnitztal is a valley created by the river of the same name north of the more famous Kirnitzschtal in the national park .

Stage 4

The Kirnitzschtal meanders along the river of the same name through the Upper Saxon Switzerland and is the starting point for many hikes. The historic Kirnitzschtalbahn runs here .

The Schrammstein view offers a romantic view of the front Schrammstein chain and Bad Schandau . This is followed by the Schrammstein cycle path .

The Lichtenhain waterfall is a redesigned waterfall of the Lichtenhain village stream over sandstone cliffs shortly before the confluence with the Kirnitzsch.

The cowshed is a 11 meter high, 17 meter wide and 24 meter deep rock gate. Its name probably goes back to the Thirty Years War , during which the farmers are said to have hidden their cattle here.

The Neumannmühle is a sawmill in Ottendorf that is accessible to the public as a technical monument .

Stage 5

The Buschmühle is a mill from the Upper Saxon Switzerland, which was in operation until 1992 and is now used as a restaurant.

The castle Arnstein is now acting as a lookout former castle from the 13th century.

The Kleinstein Cave is the second largest rock gate in Saxon Switzerland after the cowshed.

The armory is an old hunting lodge in the valley of the Großer Zschand, which was built by order of Augustus the Strong in 1728 and today serves as a small rest area.

The Großer Winterberg observation tower is located on the elevation of the same name and provides a wide view of the national park. In 2008 the building was extensively renovated.

The Schmilka watermill is a grinding mill from 1665 still in operation today, which was rediscovered and reconstructed in 2007.

Stage 6

The Reinhardtsdorf village church is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the area. It was first mentioned in a document in 1368 and shows centuries-old pictures and objects.

The Liethenmühle is a former watermill in the Kleinhennersdorf district of Gohrisch and is now used as a forest inn and guesthouse.

The Papststein is a 451 meter high rock in the Gohrisch community. From him you have an extensive view of the surrounding area. There is a mountain inn on the summit.

The Gohrisch is a popular rock of the mountains with extensive views, such as the weather vane view . You can also marvel at the Sweden Cave, which served as a hiding place during the war.

Stage 7

The Pfaffenstein is a versatile rock in Saxon Switzerland. You can marvel at the eye of the needle, the ridge path, the observation tower and the Barbarine .

The Königsstein Fortress is a fortress located on the mountain of the same name, which is considered the largest mountain fortress in Europe and one of the most popular destinations in the mountains.

The Castle Thürmsdorf  is the mansion of the former the manor Thürmsdorf which is now privately owned and will be redeveloped in stages.

The Biedermann mausoleum was built at the request of Baroness Helene von Biedermann in 1920/21. It is a family burial site.

Stage 8

The Rauenstein ridge path leads over the rock of the same name with numerous stairs and ladders.

The Robert-Sterl-Haus shows important works of art. It was the home and studio of the painter Robert Sterl .

The Canaletto house is the end point of the Malerweg. It is the famous motif of the painter Bernado Bellotto - called Canaletto - some of which are still housed here.
