The Great Winterberg at 556  m above sea level. NHN is the second highest elevation in Saxon Switzerland in Saxony . The upper part of the mountain consists of basalt , the base is made of ashlar sandstone . The state border with the Czech Republic runs over the south side .

Origin of the name

It was already known as the Winterberg in the Middle Ages. Due to its relatively high altitude, the mountain, in contrast to its surroundings, has a longer and more frequent blanket of snow.

Location and surroundings

The Great Winterberg is located in the Upper Saxon Switzerland in the Ostrau district ; the flanks of the mountain extend into the neighboring Bohemian Switzerland . At the foot of the mountain - on the Elbe - are the small towns Schmilka and Hřensko ( Herrnskretschen ). The Große Winterberg is part of a larger, contiguous mountain range which, in addition to the Kleiner Winterberg to the north, also includes the rocky areas of the Affensteine and the Schrammsteine . On the southeast side of the Winterberg massif is the Prebischtor (Czech: Pravčická brána), the largest natural sandstone rock bridge in Europe.

history

The Great Winterberg belonged to the Wildenstein lordship , later to the Lords of Wartenberg . They gave it up in 1492 against payment of 1200 Rhenish guilders, but kept the entire southern slope up to the Kamnitz . This border - today's state border with the Czech Republic - has remained unchanged since 1492 until today.

As early as 1819, the forest treasury built the first lodging house on the south summit . The first tenant was a Mr. Peschke from Lichtenhain . August von Goethe stayed here in June 1819 and wrote: “ There is a small house here, where people are well catered for, the beer, rum etc. are good. We also met two Bohemian musicians with harps who sang and played well and were surprising for the whole company . "

But the house burned down in 1821, but was rebuilt. In 1827 it was run by Friedrich Büttner. The first observation tower was erected on the summit in 1835. In the years 1840–1846 the mountain hotel, which still exists today, was built in the Swiss house style with the observation tower on the north summit. The building is now a listed building.

In 1854 the son-in-law Mr. Hangman took over the inn and at the same time ran the inn at the Lichtenhain waterfall . In 1880 Hugo Lasch took over the business on the Großer Winterberg. In 1898 Karl Prätorius went to the Großer Winterberg, he came from the Hotel Anker in Schandau . In 1918 his son Karl Prätorius took over the business. After the death of Karl Praetorius in 1929, the widow continued to run the business.

Since 1945 the Große Winterberg was no longer subject to the forestry treasury, but to the Bad Schandau trade association and the Pirna district. Mrs. Olly Prätorius was on the mountain until July 1st, 1964, supported by the managing director Robert Uhlig. From July 1, 1964 to 1966, the restaurant was HO-Betrieb under the management of Heinz Hartig. From 1966 to 1968, Mr. Weibert was managing director. During the suppression of the Prague Spring , from August 1968 to May / June 1969, the Great Winterberg was occupied by the Soviet Army . Afterwards it served as a residence for the customs administration. At Pentecost 1973, VEB Verkehrs- und Tiefbau Dresden took over the complex as a company holiday home. The building was empty between 1990 and 1994. From May 1994 Marc Henkenjohann and Marcus Ziegler from Dresden ran it on a lease, from 1998 on a long lease. Marc Henkenjohann has been managing the property alone since February 2014. Due to a lack of profitability, the restaurant, hotel and observation tower were temporarily closed at the end of the hiking season on October 31, 2016. Since the operating permit for the sewage treatment plant has been extended, the tower and the restaurant will be open in the 2017 season. At the end of 2018, operations ceased after the tenant filed an application to open insolvency proceedings. In 2018 only one snack bar was operated instead of the inn, as the operating permit had expired.

In the 1990s, an information center for the Saxon Switzerland National Park was set up in an empty building, the Ice House .

view

After the 15.5 m high wooden observation tower had to be closed in the 1970s due to dilapidation, a monument-compliant renovation was carried out in 2007/2008, in which the platform and the spire were reconstructed with larch wood based on the historical model. The tower has been open again since the end of 2008 and offers a wide panoramic view of the lonely rocky forest landscapes of Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland . In the east, your gaze wanders over the striking conical shapes of the mountains in the Lusatian Mountains to the silhouette of the Jizera and Giant Mountains more than 90 km away . The flat, undulating plateau of the Ore Mountains spreads to the southwest, while the mountainous landscape of the Bohemian Central Uplands with the rugged Milešovka ( Milleschauer ) is visible in the south . To the northwest you can see across the Elbe valley to the Collmberg near Oschatz.

Paths to the summit

A good starting point is the small town of Schmilka , from there several different paths lead to the summit. The European long-distance hiking trail E3 , the international mountain hiking trail Eisenach-Budapest and the blue- marked long-distance hiking trail Zittau - Wernigerode also run over the Großer Winterberg . Recently the Malerweg was recreated on the historical route of the former tourist route ; This leads on its course from Pirna- Liebethal via the Neumannmühle and the Großer Zschand over the Großer Winterberg. Another entrance from the Großer Zschand is the Richter gorge, which meets at the upper end at the Krinitzgrab on the Fremdweg.
