The Kleine Winterberg (500 m) is a little prominent elevation in Saxon Switzerland . The summit is located in the core zone of the Saxon Switzerland National Park , for this reason the summit is not open to the public. The old beech forest on the Kleiner Winterberg is remarkable, but some years ago it had to be felled in the area of the hiking trail for safety reasons.

Origin of the name

The mountain got its name in analogy to the Great Winterberg . As there, too, the mountain bears a closed snow cover much longer and more often due to its height.

Location and surroundings

The Kleine Winterberg is located in the Upper Saxon Switzerland in the Ostrau district and is part of a larger, contiguous mountain range which, in addition to the Großer Winterberg to the south, also includes the rocky areas of the Affensteine and the Schrammsteine . The small town of Schmilka is about three kilometers from the Kleiner Winterberg . To the north, the Kleine Zschand extends below the mountain and leads into the Kirnitzschtal .

Floristic features

The weathered basaltic soil on the Kleiner Winterberg provides a livelihood for many plant species which otherwise cannot exist on the sandy soils in Saxon Switzerland. Typical include white tooth root , woodruff , deadly nightshade and black honeysuckle . The occurrence of the poisonous oneberry is remarkable .

view

Below the summit there is a hiking path from which you have a good view of the rocky landscape in the area.

Pavilion and coat of arms stone

The so-called Winterbergpavillon is located 50 meters below the summit at a height of 450 meters. Accounts from the Hohnstein Office show the construction of a " new stone building " to store hunting equipment and as a hunting lodge for the year 1593. In the pavilion, a Latin inscription plate recalls a hunting adventure of Elector August von Sachsen , who was attacked by a deer on the Kleiner Winterberg and was able to avert this attack at the last moment with a fatal shot at the animal. This adventure is said to have induced his son, Elector Christian I, to build the first pavilion in 1558. In connection with the hunting adventure, a coat of arms stone with the electoral coat of arms and the year 1558 can be seen below an overhang. The pavilion has been damaged several times in the course of history. In 1818 it was replaced by a new building.
