The Krinitz grave on the Großer Winterberg

The Krinitz grave is a memorial stone from 1909 in Saxon Switzerland . The tombstone for the student Gotthard Krinitz , who was killed in 1908, stands east of the Großer Winterberg at the upper end of the Richter Gorge, a side valley of the Großer Zschand , just north of the state border with the Czech Republic in the Bad Schandau urban area in the Ostrau district .

In the summer of 1908 he emigrated from Frankenberg / Sa. Born 19-year-old student Gotthard Krinitz during his semester break through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . Most recently he stayed in Rosendorf on the night of August 1st , on the Bohemian side of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. From there he wanted to walk to the Prebischtor and continue on the path that was then accessible from the Prebischtor . Its exact route is not known.

After the end of the vacation, Krinitz did not return to his parents, who then posted a missing person report, initially without success. A year later, in the summer of 1909, a berry collector found his body in the dense undergrowth of the upper Richter gorges. The wallet was empty and his watch was gone, inspection revealed a broken foot. It was suspected that Krinitz had fallen or been pushed from the rock face behind the site. Since it was not possible to remove the body in the rough terrain, he was buried on the spot. His parents had him put a tombstone there with the following inscription:

“Here in God rests our
unforgettable dear son u. Brother of
the ambitious and hopeful student
vd Königl. Trade academy z. Chemnitz
Gotthard Krinitz
b. d. October 13th 1888 in Frankenberg i./Sa.
Robbed at his burial site on August 1, 1908
, different in misfortune. "

The exact cause of death could not be determined in view of the already skeletonized body. Further investigations by the police did not lead to any results either, even if an innkeeper from Herrnskretschen , the place below the Prebischtor, claimed to have seen Krinitz three weeks after his disappearance. The tombstone has been preserved since then and has since been included as a marker on maps of the area.

Allegedly an organ grinder from Herrnskretschen is said to have confessed to Krinitz's murder on his deathbed . Until the 1930s, this organ grinder posted himself to the entertainment of the hikers and built a small hut there. Its location was also recorded in contemporary hiking guides. Whether he actually confessed to Krinitz's murder cannot be proven.
