The Prebischtor ( Czech : Pravčická brána ) is located in Bohemian Switzerland . The slender rock formation is the largest natural sandstone rock bridge in Europe. With a span of 26.5, a clear height of 16, a maximum width of 8 and an archway thickness of 3 meters, it is one of the most outstanding natural monuments of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains .

history

In 1826 an inn was built at the Prebischtor. In 1881 Prince Edmund von Clary-Aldringen had the hotel "Falkennest" (Czech: Sokolí hnízdo ) built with 50 beds in its place .

Because of the heavy erosion caused by visitor traffic, the rock bridge has not been allowed to be entered since 1982. The steel stairs that led to the gate were dismantled, as were the railings on the Prebischtor. The entire area of the Prebisch Gate has been privately owned since the hotel was privatized and is accessible during opening hours for an entrance fee (2020: 95 CZK , reduced 30 CZK; or 4 €, reduced 1.5 €).

Hiking routes

The Eisenach – Budapest mountain hiking trail leads below the Prebischtor . The Prebish Gate is officially only accessible from the Czech side. It can be reached via a hiking trail from Hřensko (Herrnskretschen) or via the Gabrielensteig from Mezní Louka (Rainwiese). The tourist trail leading from the German side to the Prebischtor until 1945 ends today near the Krinitzgrab below the Großer Winterberg . The rest of the route to the German-Czech border lies in the core zone of the Saxon Switzerland National Park and is closed to hikers, as is the continuation on the Czech side in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park .

Movies

Some landscape shots for the film The Chronicles of Narnia: The King of Narnia were filmed here. Since the Prebischtor is no longer allowed to be entered, the recordings in which the actors seem to be walking over the rock bridge were subsequently shot and inserted in the studio. The Prebischtor and the lower part of the hotel can also be seen as a backdrop in the film " The Guardian of Truth - Dina's Determination ".
