Bosnian-Herzegovinian border crossings to neighboring countries
Bosnia and Herzegovina has three neighboring states: Croatia with 932 km, Serbia with 357 km and Montenegro with 249 km of common borders . The border with Croatia has also been the EU's external border since July 1, 2013, and in future it will probably also be the external border of the Schengen area .
Categories of border crossings
The legal basis for the Bosnian-Herzegovinian border crossings into the neighboring countries is the resolution of the Council of Ministers on the border crossings of Bosnia and Herzegovina of May 3, 2012. The resolution defines four categories of border crossings:
- Međunarodni granični prelaz I kategorije
- for people and goods
- Međunarodni granični prelaz II kategorije
- as above; excluding goods that must be checked or taxed
- Međunarodni granični prelaz za putnički saobraćaj
- only for people and luggage, but no goods
- Granični prelazi za pogranični saobraćaj
- only for people residing in the border area (local)
Border crossings in the first three categories are open all the time.
Croatia
A special feature of the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia is that it divides Croatia into two parts near Neum on the Adriatic Sea. The area around Dubrovnik forms an exclave, with transit traffic via Neum.
