Jamena ( Serbian - Cyrillic Јамена ) is a village in the Serbian part of Syrmia . It lies in the alluvial plain of the Lower Sava and is the westernmost settlement in the municipality of Šid .
In 2002 the village had 1121 inhabitants. Most of them were Serbs . Jamena is surrounded on three sides by international borders with Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina , only to the east there is a connection to Serbian territory.
history
Jamena was originally founded as an outpost of the Roman Empire on the Save and has been destroyed several times in its history.
1943 in the middle of World War II Croatian killed Ustasha - fascists 2,500 villagers in just two days and set fire to the whole village.
In the Yugoslav wars , the place was completely cut off from the rest of Serbia, as the only road connection runs through Croatian territory. In 1999, NATO aircraft bombed the site, killing one person.
traffic
Not far from Jamena there is a border crossing to Bosnia and Herzegovina : a ferry connection across the Sava that is only open to the local population. Several times a day there is a bus from Jamena to Šid , 33 km away , from where destinations all over Serbia are headed for.
