Domaljevac is a place in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the canton of Posavina and is the capital of the municipality of Domaljevac-Šamac .

geography

Domaljevac is located on the south bank of the Sava River and thus borders on Croatia . In addition, Domaljevac is on the road connecting the two cities of Orašje in the east and Šamac in the west.

history

The first mention of the place Domaljevac as a populated place was in the year 1548. Until 1910 a distinction was made between a lower and an upper Domaljevac. In 1926 the first municipality called Domaljevac was founded. In addition to Domaljevac, this consisted of the nearby towns of Batkuša, Bazik, Brvnik, Grebnice, Liskovac and Odmut. During the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Domaljevac belonged to the municipality of Bosanski Šamac . During the Bosnian War Domaljevac was defended by the 104th Brigade of the Hrvatsko vijeće obrane (HVO; Croatian for Croatian Defense Council). When the national territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina was reorganized as part of the Dayton Agreement , the municipality of Domaljevac-Šamac followed in 1998 as a new establishment. Since then, Domaljevac has served as the main town and seat of the local government.

In mid-May 2014, Domaljevac was hit by significant floods due to the Yvette in the Balkans .

population

According to the 2013 census, Domaljevac has 3,691 inhabitants. Before the Bosnian War in 1991, the population was 4,125. The majority of the population describes themselves as Croatians and belongs to the Roman Catholic Church .

Culture

Annually on July 26th, the patron saint Saint Anne ( Croatian sveta Ana) is celebrated. In addition to the Roman Catholic mass, there is a street festival in the form of rides and market stalls.

In this context, the days of the Domaljevac-Šamac Municipality ( Croatian dani općine Domaljevac-Šamac) have been celebrated since 1998 , with numerous cultural and sporting events being offered throughout the municipality.
