The Šamac - Sarajevo railway is an electrified railway line in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The partially double-track line is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor 5c from Budapest via Osijek and Sarajevo to Ploče .

prehistory

After Austria-Hungary had occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina , the Austro-Hungarian army first built a narrow-gauge taxiway from Bosanski Brod to Zenica . In 1882 the continuation of the Bosna Railway to Sarajevo was opened to traffic. The substructure of this section with a minimum radius of 275 meters has already been designed for standard gauge in order to facilitate subsequent gauge changeover .

In the 20th century, the Bosnabahn with its narrow gauge of 760 millimeters was no longer able to cope with the demands. In 1910, the route was simplified with the opening of the 1532-meter-long Vranduk Tunnel . In addition, the standard-gauge Sava bridge between the Slavonski Brod and Bosanski Brod stations was blown up during the Second World War . Yugoslavia decided to convert the Sarajevo – Doboj section of the Bosna Railway to standard gauge and to extend it to Bosanski Šamac .

construction

The railway line was built by the youth brigades with simple means.

The construction of the 242-kilometer-long railway line by the youth brigades only took a little less than eight months. The railway line and the 107 buildings belonging to it were built by around 210,000 young people from Germany and abroad. Among them were Olof Palme , Pierre Trudeau , Pierre Alechinsky and Jurij Brězan . On November 16, 1947, the Bosanski Šamac – Sarajevo railway was opened. Larger engineering structures are the bridge over the Sava in Šamac as well as the Vranduk tunnel and eight other shorter tunnels with a total length of 2354 meters. The total length of the track is 239 kilometers.

business

On February 14, 1971, in the Vranduk railway accident, the diesel locomotive of a passenger train caught fire in the Vranduk tunnel. 33 people were killed. Diesel locomotives could be dispensed with after the Jugoslovenske Železnice (JŽ) electrified the line with 25 kV 50 Hz .

After the division of Bosnia-Herzegovina into two entities as a result of the Dayton Treaty , the section Šamac– Maglaj came to the Željeznice Republike Srpske (ŽRS) and the section in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2001 to the Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine (ŽFBH). In the border station Maglaj despite the same technical standards changed locomotives between ZSR and ŽFBH.

The railway line plays an important role in freight transport, especially for opening up the country's industrial centers. It is only of minor importance in passenger transport. In the 2015 timetable , two express trains ran daily between Doboj and Sarajevo , one of them from Zagreb . There were three regional trains between Doboj and Zenica and six on the section between Zenica and Sarajevo . The short section Kostajnica –Doboj is shared by the trains coming from Banja Luka , which usually end in Doboj. The Talgo connection Sarajevo – Banja Luka, which has existed since 2017, was supplemented in 2018 with a second pair of trains from Sarajevo via Novi Grad to Bihać on the Una Railway . It is planned to reintroduce the international Sarajevo – Zagreb trains.
