Life

Pierre Alechinsky is the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants and grew up in Brussels. In 1944 he began studying book illustration and typography at the School of Architecture and Applied Arts in Brussels. From 1949 he was a member of the artist group CoBrA , in which he got involved primarily with the production of the CoBra magazine . He has lived in Paris since 1951 , where he initially dealt with the etching technique , which was taught in Atelier 17 by SW Hayter . In 1954 he met the Chinese artist Walasse Ting , who taught him Chinese painting techniques. In 1955 Alechinsky traveled to Japan , where he made a film about the country's traditional calligraphy . Also in the 1950s, his style changed from largely abstract forms to rough figuration and objectivity. His first solo exhibition was organized by Otto van de Loo in Munich in 1961 . In 1963 Alechinsky moved to Bougival near Paris, where he still lives and works today. From 1983 to 1987 he worked as a professor in Paris.

Alechinsky's main work after the Cobra period combines western and eastern (mainly Japanese) elements in a graphic style of representation. The influence of calligraphy is evident in his works. His pictures are created on paper, which he paints with Indian ink and acrylic paints. The finished pictures are then drawn onto canvas. The marginal drawings, which he also calls marginal notes, are characteristic. These marginal drawings, which take up a lot of space and can consist of several individual images, form a unit with the main image. Ink images are given colored edge drawings with acrylic and vice versa. He often uses paper that has already been used, such as historical maps or receipts, as a painting surface.

Pierre Alechinsky was a participant in documenta III (1964) and documenta VI in 1977 in Kassel . He exhibited with Christian Dotremont at the 1972 Venice Biennale in the Belgian pavilion. In cooperation with him, a mural for the Brussels metro was created in 1976 . For the 2018/2019 season at the Vienna State Opera , he designed the huge large picture (176 m²) “Loin d'ici” as the 21st work of art for the “Iron Curtain” exhibition series conceived by museum in progress .

Works by Alechinsky can be viewed in the Cobra Museum .
