Elmar Oberegger (born May 10, 1972 in Wels ) is an Austrian railway historian .

Life

Elmar Oberegger studied history , sociology and political science at the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg . He became interested in the "history of transport" through the lectures given by Georg Erich Schmid and his assistant Peter Staudacher . However, there was no greater cooperation because both left the university. 1999 Oberegger was based on the dissertation supervised by Reinhold Wagnleitner with the courage of desperation. A social history of the first generation of the RAF ( Baader-Meinhof-Gruppe ) to the Dr. phil. PhD.

As a result, a close relationship arose with the Viennese professor Roland Girtler , whom Oberegger describes in his monograph “10 Commandments of Field Research” as a “rebellious scholar” (p. 55). In 2005 Girtler paid tribute to the importance of railway history in the article "The Magic of the Railway". Together with him, Oberegger runs the “Internet Pyhrnbahn Museum”. In 2006 both held the seminar “Sociology of Transport” at the University of Vienna. At Girtler he worked as a research assistant until 2008.

Oberegger's representations and analyzes of the history of the railways are primarily structured in terms of social history. He sees railway archeology and the “Ero-epic Conversation” (Girtler) as important neighboring disciplines. The history of technology and the history of locomotives, however, are only marginal topics, which repeatedly brings him bitter criticism.

In 2004 he took over the management of the information office for Austrian railway history founded in 2001. He played a major role in the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition “Coal & Steam” (2006) in Ampflwang . In 2010 he realized the “Salzburg Railway Museum” with the support of Sepp Forcher and Michael Populorum. Oberegger is currently working on an “Internet encyclopedia on the railway history of the Alps-Danube-Adriatic region” and a “Railway history of the Austrian states”.

On November 25, 2010 Oberegger was awarded the title " Scientific Consultant " by the Upper Austrian Governor Josef Pühringer for his work on the history of railways .
