Josef Pühringer (born October 30, 1949 in Traun ) is a former Austrian politician (ÖVP) who was Governor of Upper Austria from 1995 to 2017 . From 1995 to 2017 he was regional party leader of the Upper Austrian People's Party (OÖVP).

Life

Josef Pühringer was born on October 30, 1949 in Traun as the son of master tailor Josef Pühringer senior. and his wife Maria and has a sister Maria who is two years younger than him. After graduating from the Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium in Linz in 1970, he studied law at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . In 1976 he became a doctor of law doctorate . During his studies he worked as a religion teacher in Traun. Pühringer has been married to his wife Christa since 1989. This marriage resulted in three children, Katharina Maria (* 1991), Josef (* 1992) and Peter (* 1997).

Josef Pühringer began his political career in 1973 as a city councilor in his hometown of Traun. 1974 to 1983 he was chairman of the Young People's Party in Upper Austria. From 1981 Pühringer was city party chairman of the ÖVP Traun and from November 1985 to April 1988 he was deputy mayor. Since 1979 Pühringer has held a mandate to the Upper Austrian state parliament , 1986/87 he was ÖVP state party secretary, in 1987 he became state councilor under Governor Ratzenböck .

From February 11, 1995 to April 1, 2017, Josef Pühringer was regional party chairman of the OÖVP and from March 2, 1995 to April 5, 2017, Governor of Upper Austria. In 1997, his “Dr. Joe “youth campaign caused a sensation when it was unknown for months who was behind this pseudonym. From 2003 Pühringer led a black-green coalition .

At the beginning of November 2007, Josef Pühringer took over the office of President of the Austrian Folk Song Society .

After the state elections in 2009 , the Upper Austrian People's Party decided to continue the black-green cooperation ( state government Pühringer IV ) with its state party executive . In contrast to 2003, a manifesto of cooperation was signed with the other two governing parties, the SPÖ and the FPÖ. On October 22nd, 2009 - one day before the election of the governor in the Upper Austrian state parliament - the parties agreed on the unanimous re-election of Josef Pühringer as governor.

On February 24, 2014, Pühringer announced that he would run again in the 2015 state election. After the state elections in 2015 , on October 23, 2015, the state government Pühringer V in Upper Austria was elected and sworn in for the first time, a state government with a black and blue labor agreement within the framework of a proportional government. "I will not stay for six years", he announced on this occasion, however, that he would withdraw before the end of the legislative period in favor of his designated successor Thomas Stelzer .

On February 9, 2017, Pühringer announced that it would convene a state party congress of the OÖVP on April 1, 2017 in order not to stand for election there. His deputy at the time, Thomas Stelzer , was nominated for the office of regional party chairman of the OÖVP, and was elected Pühringer's successor with 99.9% of the votes at the party congress on April 1, 2017.

On April 5, 2017, Pühringer finally resigned from his position as Governor of Upper Austria. Stelzer succeeded him in this position on April 6, 2017.

In 2017 Pühringer Josef Ratzenböck succeeded him as chairman of the Upper Austrian Seniors' Association .

Controversy

In the past, Pühringer was repeatedly criticized by the public for his participation in a dance event organized by German national fraternities in Linz .
