Adolf Eigl
Adolf Karl Eigl (born February 14, 1883 in St. Pölten ; † March 5, 1958 in Linz ) was the first governor of the Austrian state of Upper Austria after the Second World War . He was non-party, belonged to the liberal-national camp.
Eigl graduated from the Academic Gymnasium Spittelwiese in Linz and then studied law in Vienna and Heidelberg . During his studies he became a member of the Upper Austrian Germanic fraternity in Vienna in the winter semester of 1902/03 . In 1912 he received his doctorate in law.
He had already been active in various positions in the administration of the federal state in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , the First Republic , the corporate state and National Socialism ( Reich Governor of Upper Danube ). In order to ensure continuity in the administration after the end of the world war, he was commissioned by the American occupying power to form a government. From May 16, 1945, he was governor of Upper Austria.
On August 22, 1945, he was imprisoned in the American detention camp for prominent National Socialists ( Glasenbach near Salzburg ), where he remained until June 1946. After returning from the internment camp, he was given leave and retired on June 30, 1948.
Eigl is buried at the St. Barbara cemetery in Linz.
