Tolisa is a village in Posavina Canton in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina . The village is located about four kilometers west of the main town Orašje on the right bank of the Sava , at the mouth of the Tolisa river .

history

Tolisa is first mentioned in the 13th century and is often associated with the first elementary school. The name Tolis comes from ancient Greek and means something like "cloudy river", which refers to the Tolisa river.

Residents

Politically, Tolisa belongs to the Orašje Municipality and the Posavina County. In terms of area, it is one of the larger villages in the Orašje municipality and has an area of 121.8 km². Tolisa borders Croatia to the north, Donja Mahala village to the east, Kostrč village to the southeast, and Domaljevac-Šamac municipality to the west . In 2007 the number of inhabitants was approx. 3420.

The school

In the first half of the 19th century Bosnia suffered a lot of floods, many residents became seriously ill and poverty and misery spread everywhere. Due to poor living conditions, few had the need for writing skills and there were only private schools that only privileged students were allowed to attend. In 1823 there was a great historical change in the school system in Bosnia. Franciscan Ilija Starčević got permission to build the first elementary school in Bosnia and Herzegovina because of his merits. In the same year the school was built in the center of the village of Tolisa. In the course of history it has been torn down several times and rebuilt in different places. Now it is a little bigger than before, opposite the square where the first elementary school was located.

Church and Franciscan Monastery in Tolisa

The Franciscan monastery in Tolisa dates from the middle of the 19th century. At the time of the Ottoman rule in Bosnia, all monasteries were destroyed in the 17th century, so that many Catholics left this area and settled on the other bank of the Sava River. The Catholic churches and monasteries were not mentioned in history until the middle of the 18th century. In 1784 the parish of Tolisa separated from the parish of Ravna and in 1802 was made an independent parish. At the beginning of the 19th century, Tolisa was of great importance as a cultural and religious center. The foundation stone for the monastery was laid in 1862. The current monastery with library and museum was built in 1923. In 1864 the largest church in Bosnia and Herzegovina began to be built (58 × 20 m), which was completed in 1881. From an architectural point of view, the church is a three-aisled pillar basilica with two church towers. Due to the unique shape of the church towers, “Uznesenje Blažene Djevice Marije” differs from all other churches in Bosnia.
