Bajina Bašta ( Serbian - Cyrillic Бајина Башта ; German " Garden of Baja " ) is a small town in the Okrug Zlatibor in Serbia with 9158 (2011) inhabitants. The city is the seat of the municipality of the same name .
history
In 1834 Bajina Bašta was built on the remains of the village of Pljeskovo on the right side of the Drina river , between Rača and Pilica at the foot of the Tara Mountains . It is on the border with Bosnia .
The name Bajina Bašta comes from the large orchards and vegetable gardens of the Ottoman nobleman Baja , which were cultivated on the banks of the Pilica River. In 1858 the town became the administrative center of the Rača municipality . On September 15, 1872, Prince Milan Obrenović IV gave Bajina Bašta city status by decree. In order to facilitate the exchange of goods between Serbia and Bosnia, the first border station was opened at Skelani in 1880 .
Attractions
In 1966, a hydropower plant was built on Lake Perućac (Serb./bosn. Perućačko jezero or Перућачко језеро) about ten kilometers west of the city. It is the second largest hydropower plant in Serbia after the one at Đerdap on the Danube.
Nearby is the famous Rača monastery from the 13th century.
