The Perućacsee (Serb./bosn. Perućačko jezero or Перућачко језеро ) is a reservoir on the Drina River on the border between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina . It has an area of 12.4 km² and a maximum depth of 70 m. The water level is 290 m above sea level.

The reservoir was dammed at the end of the 1960s and extends between Višegrad and Bajina Bašta over a length of about 50 km. It is surrounded by the mountains Osat in the north, Bokšanica in the west and Zvijezda in the east, between which the Drina flows in a gorge up to 1000 meters deep.

history

With the construction of the dam, the former traffic route from Višegrad along the left bank of the river towards Žepa was flooded. The location of the Ottoman Žepa bridge from the late 16th century was also below the projected water level, so that the bridge was dismantled in 1966 and rebuilt at a higher location upstream of the Žepa .

In the summer of 2010, the lake's water level was lowered for two and a half months due to maintenance work on the dam. During this time, dozens of volunteers from Sarajevo under the direction of the Bosnian Institute for Missing People searched the now exposed banks. By September 23, the remains of at least 373 people who were believed to have been killed in the massacres of the Muslim population of Višegrad in the spring of 1992 and thrown into the Drina had been found. In addition, the remains of three German Wehrmacht soldiers were discovered.
