history

Detail of an Austrian military map (1914) showing the railway line

In the Middle Ages, the “Hungarian Road” (Uherská stezka), an important road connection between the then Hungarian Waagtal and Moravia, ran over this pass. At the same time, numerous armed raids by Hungarian insurgents and the Turks into Moravia took place over the pass.

The settlement of Vlář has been documented on the pass since 1503 , it was mentioned again in 1512 as Vlářa and in 1518 it was called desolate.

With the expansion of the rail network in the late 19th century, the suitability as a railway line was checked. After the construction of a railway from Opava over the Wlarapass to Upper Hungary , which was planned by the Moravian-Silesian Central Railway in the mid-1870s, failed due to the company's inadequate financial strength, on October 28, 1888, the still missing, only three-kilometer-long route from the State Railway Company from Svatý Štěpán to Wlara Pass completed ( Brno-Wlara Pass ). In order for a connection to the Hungarian Railway was created, in Trenčianska Teplá of the railway line Bratislava-Žilina branches.

The pass became the end point of the ČD route Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště –Vlárský průsmyk and the ŽSR route Trenčianska Teplá– Horné Srnie –Vlarský priesmyk.
