Makov (Hungarian Trencsénmakó - older also Makó , Polish Maków ) is a municipality in north-western Slovakia .
geography
The place is located in the Kysuca Valley between the Javorník Mountains ( Javorníky ) and the Turzovská vrchovina , only 5 km from the border with the Czech Republic , 20 km from Bytča and 26 km from Čadca .
Makov is located at an altitude between 580 m and 1000 m. The highest mountain in the area is Veľký Javorník with 1071 m.

Over 90% of the population are Catholic.
history
A settlement Viszoka-Makov was mentioned in a document as early as 1720. The present municipality was established in 1895 through the outsourcing of seven villages that were united in the municipality of Vysoká nad Kysucou .

Economy and Transport
The most important branch of the economy is tourism, especially winter sports. There are also a number of bike paths and hiking trails.
The station is the terminus of the Čadca – Makov railway line (timetable no. 128). The regional bus transport is operated by the SAD Žilina.
The European route 442 leads through the village on the I / 18 from the Makov Pass ( Makovský průsmyk ) to Großbitsch , from which the road II / 487 branches off via Turzovka to Čadca .
