The Čadca – Makov railway is a local railway in northwest Slovakia through Okres Čadca . It connects the densely populated valley of the upper Kysuca valley with the main railway in Čadca and leads via the town of Turzovka to the terminus in Makov .
history
The first efforts to build the railway line were made in 1912, when the former Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Ks.Od.) applied for permission to build the railway from the Hungarian Ministry of Commerce. The local timber merchants also had an interest in transporting timber faster and cheaper. The concession was granted on April 8, 1913 and construction began shortly thereafter. The railway line opened on July 9, 1914 and it cost 3,658,000 K.
After the First World War, attempts were made to connect the line with the local railway from Vsetín to Velké Karlovice, which is on the Czech side , in order to supplement connections between the two Czechoslovakian regions.
In 1921 a short forest railway to the Kopanice district in Makov was built on a county road, but it was closed again shortly after the protests of the local population.
Today there are several local trains that run between the train stations of Čadca, Turzovka and Makov. Travel time between the two ends is around 50 minutes. Freight traffic is of some importance.
