Vysoká nad Kysucou (until 1927 Slovak only "Vysoká"; Hungarian Hegyeshely - until 1907 Viszoka and rarely Viszokamakó ) is a place and a municipality in the Okres Čadca of the Žilinský kraj in the extreme north of Slovakia with about 2900 inhabitants.

geography

The municipality is located in the upper Kysuca Valley in the traditional Kysuce landscape , between the Turzovská vrchovina mountains in the north and the Javorníky mountains in the south. Vysoká nad Kysucou is 23 kilometers away from Čadca .

Administratively, the municipality is divided into eight districts: Jedlovník, Nižný Kelčov, Semeteš, Vrchrieka, Vyšný Kelčov, Vysoká nad Kysucou, Zátoka and Zlámaná.

history

The place arose in the course of the Wallachian colonization of the area and in the early 17th century separated from the area of the neighboring municipality of Turzovka . In 1619 the place was mentioned as Viszoka and belonged to the Bytča estate . In 1720 the place is now mentioned as Viszoka-Makov , because of the greater importance of the second part of the village, which was finally spun off in 1895. The population engaged in cattle and sheep breeding, as well as forestry in the surrounding mountains, which resulted in numerous small settlements (Slov. Kopanice ).

Because of the great poverty and poorly fertile soil, many residents emigrated early on into the world as wire ties, peddlers or plumbers. Until the end of the 19th century, the destination was Lower Hungary. Since then, emigration to the United States has become more common; the American astronaut Eugene Cernan has his ancestors from Vysoká. In the 20th century, some residents found work not only in the surrounding towns, but also in the coal field around Ostrava .

Until 1918 the place was in Trenčín County in the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia. In the final days of the Second World War, 21 residents of the small settlement Semeteš were murdered by fascist troops.
