Korňa (Hungarian Kornyavölgy ) is a municipality in the Okres Čadca in northern Slovakia .
geography
Korňa is located in the small valley of the Korňianka brook in the Turzovská vrchovina (part of the Beskydy Mountains ) and is accessible by a branch from road 484. The center of the village is 6 km north-northwest of the town of Turzovka , to which Korňa belonged until 1954. Administratively, the municipality today consists of the three districts Korňa I, II and III, with a total of 36 small settlements.
history
The community was created in 1954 by merging the scattered settlements Nižná Korňa and Vyšná Korňa , which until then were administratively subordinate to the city of Turzovka. The inhabitants of the settlements were mainly active in woodworking, in particular they were known for the production of wooden roof shingles and spinning wheels. Because of the poor living conditions, many of the male residents left Korňa between 1920 and 1940 to find work abroad, but after the end of the Second World War the number of inhabitants remained fairly constant (1950 - 2412 inhabitants, 2001 - 2266 inhabitants).
Attractions
Sights include two churches - both a wooden one from 1944 and the modern church built in 1994. There is also a small pilgrimage site on the Živčáková Mountain in the municipality.
The above-ground oil well at the lower end of the community is a special attraction . However, there are no plans to exploit crude oil for the foreseeable future.
