Road layout

In the Hatlerdorf district of Dornbirn , Schmitternstrasse, known as Schweizerstrasse in the local road network, branches off to the west of Vorarlberger Strasse (L 190) and then runs for about a kilometer through populated area. After about 800 meters, the road crosses under the tracks of the Lindau – Bludenz railway line at the Hatlerdorf stop. The Dornbirn settlement area ends around 200 meters later and the road reaches a 3.6-kilometer section that leads through the Ried , a large green area in the Rhine Valley. This is also where the Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn (A 14) is crossed, shortly afterwards the municipality of Lustenau is reached and then the Vorarlberg Rheintalbinnenkanal is crossed.

In the course of the Schmit Tern road crosses as part of a roundabout , the Rheinstrasse (L 203), and then performs in a gentle curve on the Altenrhein to. The Austrian road network and with it the L 45 ends at the Schmitterbrücke customs office. This is followed by the crossing of the border between Austria and Switzerland , whereby the road layout on the Swiss side merges into the Rheinstrasse of the local community Schmitter (political community Diepoldsau). The Schmitterbrücke border crossing in Lustenau is usually a little frequented and not approved for heavy traffic.

Motorway connection Rheintal-Mitte

A new junction to the Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn A 14 has been under construction since 2020 in the area of the current underpass of Schmitternstrasse beneath the same. The project provides for a new full connection point called “Rheintal Mitte” to be built in this area, which is to connect in particular the operating areas in the southern part of the Dornbirn municipal area ( Wallenmahd ) and in the northern part of the Hohenems municipal area ( Unterklien ) to the highest-quality road network . At the same time, the construction of a freight road, which is to lead from the L 45 parallel to the motorway directly east of it to the Dornbirn-Süd junction, is intended to further relieve this heavily used junction. The primary goal of the construction of the motorway connection is to relieve the L 45 in the Dornbirn local area, as a new feeder road will be built directly from the industrial area (extension of the existing Bleichestrasse as the new L 45a). The completion of the new motorway connection is planned for 2022.Template: future / in 2 years
