Unterlien (also Unter-Klien ) together with Oberklien form the Klien district in Hohenems .
Origin of name
The original name of this part of Hohenems was " Bagolte " and also " Unterberg ". The name " Klien " is said to come from a family name. In 1397 Hans Klen from Bagolte bought a plot of land near Schmalzmahd and the previous name Bagolte was replaced by Klen / Klin / Klien. In the land register of 1611 the name Klien was mentioned next to Bagolte. " Bagolten " and " Schmalzmähder " are still names of parcels in Unterlien today.
history
The lower Klien has belonged to the Hohenems rulership or the city of Hohenems for centuries (probably since the High Middle Ages ). In the “General National Calendar for Tyrol and Vorarlberg”, 17 houses and 25 families with a total of 112 people are counted on Unterberg (Unterklien) in 1825.
Topography, geography, location and traffic
Unterklien ( 430 m above sea level ) is about 800 m as the crow flies from Oberklien ( 422 m above sea level ) and about 2.7 km from the center of Hohenems.
Oberklien is located directly below the rear part of Emsreute (about 740 m above sea level ), arranged under the steeply sloping rock walls made of various layers of rock.
In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” (1839), Unterklien is listed as an independent hamlet and part of Hohenems. Also in the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ".
In Unterlien there is pyrrhotite , outdated also known as magnetic gravel. A frequently occurring mineral from the mineral class of " sulfides and sulfosalts ". The area around the Breitenberg is geologically very turbulent and has been known for centuries for massive and uncontrolled rockfalls due to the different rock layers.
In the lower part there is also a large cave called “Hoadaloch” (Heidenloch). According to tradition, pagans are said to have lived there. In the Napoleonic wars, these also served as refuge.
Waters
The "Unter Klienbach" separates the Rhomberg quarry from the district. To the south-west is the Ermenbach and to the north the Landgraben. The Landgraben near Unterklien also forms the border between the municipalities of Dornbirn and Hohenems.
Craft, trade
The quarrying was and is carried out in the area of the Unterklien for centuries. The quarrying Klien Hohenems the Fa. Rhomberg dominates the district of Klien visually and the operator is a major employer.
religion
The residents of Oberklien and Unterklien belonged to the parish church of St. Martin in Dornbirn until the Josefin reforms around 1785 .
