The Rhomberg Group is an international, family-owned construction company. The group of companies specializes in the areas of construction, resources and rail technology. The name Rhomberg goes back to the founder Cornelius Rhomberg, who laid the foundation stone for the group of companies as early as 1886. Today the managing directors are Hubert Rhomberg and Ernst Thurnher.

The headquarters of the Rhomberg Group has been in Bregenz , Austria , since it was founded .

history

The construction company was founded by Otto Rhomberg in 1886. In 1892 his brother, builder Cornelius Rhomberg, got on board. In the first few years, mainly residential and commercial buildings were built in downtown Bregenz. Large projects (expansion of the Bregenz harbor, Bregenz district administration, Herz-Jesu-Kirche ) were not implemented until 1900 . After the early death of Cornelius Rhomberg in 1912, the construction business was initially shut down - the considerable assets were lost in the following years as a forced war loan.

At the age of 27, Cornelius' son Walter Rhomberg founded the company that still exists today under the name "Walter Rhomberg, Baumeister" in October 1938. After a short time, major projects emerged (conversion of the former beach hotel in Lochau into a customs school , energy buildings for Vorarlberger Illwerke, etc.). During the Second World War , the company "Walter Rhomberg Baumeister" also built air raid systems for the civilian population and tunnels for industrial companies.

In the post-war period, the company benefited from the reconstruction and the subsequent economic boom of the 1950s to 1970s (industrial buildings by Benger and Elektra Bregenz , construction of the Kornmarkttheater , the festival hall and the Kunsthaus in Bregenz, the indoor swimming pool, the national bank, the pipeline on the bank of Lake Constance). Already in the 1960s, the entry into track and road construction took place ( Rheintalautobahn , from 1970 new construction of Wolfurt freight station).

In 1972 Walter-Heinz Rhomberg became managing director of the company "Walter Rhomberg Baumeister" with sole signing authority. He expanded the company considerably in the years up to 1999 (founding of Goldbeck-Rhomberg GmbH, participation and later full acquisition of Bahnbau Wels GmbH, founding of Express Beton GmbH & Co KG, founding of MIGU Asphaltbau GmbH, branch in Switzerland, entry into the property development business).

His son Hubert Rhomberg joined the family business in 1999 and took over the management from 2002, which he still holds today. Under his leadership, the railway technology sector in particular was expanded - also internationally (implementation of the slab track on the Wolfgrubentunnel, Arlberg tunnel , ICE Cologne-Rhein-Main line , Lötschberg tunnel technology , and the new Mattstetten-Rothrist line ). In 2012, Rhomberg Rail Holding merged with the Swiss company Sersa (an abbreviation for “Soudage électrique des rails SA”) to form a 50:50 joint venture.

In the construction sector, innovations in the field of energy efficiency and resource conservation were developed and implemented (e.g. CO 2 -neutral hybrid wooden high-rise).

The Rhomberg Group and its subsidiaries have a total of 2,845 employees (as of March 31, 2019) and are active in various business areas and at several locations.
