Oberklien (also Ober-Klien ) together with Unterklien form the district of Klien in Hohenems .

Origin of name

The name " Klien " is said to come from a family name. In 1397 Hans Klen from Bagolte bought a plot of land near Schmalzmahd and the previous name Bagolte was replaced by Klen / Klin / Klien. In the land register of 1611 the place name Klien was mentioned next to Bagolte. " Bagolten " and " Schmalzmähder " are still Name of parcels in sub Klien .

history

The Oberklien has belonged to the Hohenems rulership and city of Hohenems for centuries.

On May 29, 1809, a decisive battle took place near Oberklien. Shortly before, many of the Bavarian troops in the country had been withdrawn because of other uprisings, and the Vorarlbergers tried to use this opportunity to shake off foreign rule. Colonel Grouvel, the military leader of the Württemberg people , was beaten by the volunteers with about 1,000 men. Commanders of the regional contingent of Vorarlberg were u. a. the shooting majors Josef Sigmund Nachbauer (teacher in Rankweil, 1759–1813), Bernhard Riedmiller (1757–1832) and Josef Christian Müller (1775–1851).

On the same day, the second battle on Bergisel in Tyrol took place. The lost battle of Wagram on July 5 and 6, 1809, in which Napoleon's French troops defeated Archduke Karl of Austria and the Austrian army, ended the Fifth Coalition War and the Vorarlbergers' efforts for freedom also came to an end. They had to surrender to the French superiority under General Beaumont. There is no commemorative plaque at Oberklien about the Vorarlbergers' struggle for freedom.

On May 7, 1971, there was a major rock fall, which was triggered or favored by the rock quarrying for the construction of the Rhine Valley motorway (see below) and triggered supra-regional reporting.

Topography, geography, location and traffic

Oberklien ( 422  m above sea level ) is about 800 m as the crow flies from Unterklien ( 430  m above sea level ) and about 2 km from the center of Hohenems.

Oberklien is located directly below Emsreute ( 682  m above sea level ), arranged in a semicircle under the steeply sloping rock walls made of various layers of rock.

In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” (1839) Oberklien is listed as an independent hamlet and part of Hohenems. Also in the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ".

Relatively narrow streets lead to and from the town, which are not (anymore) suitable for through traffic.

In Oberklien there are two biotopes that are designated as habitats worthy of protection in the Vorarlberg biotope inventory: the litter areas Oberklien (biotope 30105) and the wetland Oberklien (biotope 30208).

Waters

The Oberklienbach (also: Haselwurzbach), the Ermenbach and a channel of the Klien waterworks (Dornbirn) flow through Oberklien. The Klien pumping station contributes around 15% to the water supply of the city of Dornbirn (another 35% comes from the Ebnitertal and 50% via the drinking water association Rheintal, Mäder ).

Craft, trade

The so-called “Upper Quarry” in Erlach , adjacent to Oberklien, was operated by the Büchele family in the 1930s. Rock was also mined in the Oberklien area for centuries.

Hiking, sports

The ladder path was built as a shortcut for the residents of the Emsreute parcel to the fields in the Rhine Valley and the factories in Wallenmahd in Dornbirn and is now a popular shortcut for hikers as well.

Rockfalls

The area around the Breitenberg is geologically very turbulent and has been known for centuries for massive and uncontrolled rockfalls due to the different rock layers.

On May 7, 1971, about 250,000 m³ of rubble loosened above the houses in Oberklien. The debris came to stand shortly before the houses. Nobody was hurt.

As was later determined, a rock wedge with about 250,000 m³ of silica limestone and overlying Valangien limestone loosened from the Drusberg layers falling down into the valley and collapsed about 100 meters in altitude and slid down to the valley. This rock fall was preceded by several years of excavation of around 700,000 m³ of rubble and moraine, which was used for the construction of the Rhine Valley motorway. As a result of the mining, the rock wedge, roughly two thirds of which was buried in this rubble, was unbalanced. The rock wedge only started moving months after the completion of the mining and without any weather-related cause. Shortly before the rock fall, it was noticed in Oberklien that there was more rockfall and unrest among the birds nesting on the rock and through crevasses that opened up. This enabled the residents to be evacuated at the last minute.
