history

In the late antique period there was a Burgus in the Betzentobel . Located on the Roman road from Brigantium to Cambodunum , it served to protect the border. The Leiblach parcel was first mentioned in a document as Liubilunaha in 802, the first documented mention of the current place name dates back to 1226 as Herebrandeswiler . In 1523 Hörbranz came with part of Bregenz to Austria. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Hörbranz heard since its founding in 1861. The place was 1945-1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria. On July 6th, 2008 Hörbranz was appointed market town.

Mayor of the community is Karl Hehle (ÖVP). He had to run in a runoff election against the FPÖ candidate Josef Siebmacher in the mayor's direct election in 2015, after neither of the two could win an absolute majority of the votes in the first ballot. In the runoff election, Hehle was clearly confirmed in office with 56.25 percent of the vote.

coat of arms

The Hörbranz community had no coat of arms until 1935. On October 28, 1935, the municipality of Hörbranz received a municipal coat of arms from the Vorarlberg state government. The name of the first Alemannic settler in this area, Herebrand , was chosen as the historical basis for the new municipal coat of arms , who suggested in his name: "Army sword". This became the heraldic dominant figure for the coat of arms. It shows the coat of arms a silver sword with a golden hilt in a red diagonal bar on a golden, damascus shield. The coloring was determined by general heraldic and aesthetic considerations. The red and the sword thus do not express an earlier right of blood jurisdiction in the community . The reference to the name Herebrand is also intended to refer to the repeated warlike events that have taken place over the centuries on the soil of the municipality of Hörbranz.

Culture and sights

Salvatorkolleg
  • Halbenstein Castle : In the Backenreute district, the minimal remains of the former castle can be found on the access path to Ruggburg.
  • Catholic parish church Hörbranz hl. Martin
  • Salvatorian College: In 1893, Father Franziskus Maria vom Kreuz Jordan founded the Order of Salvatorians as a College of Mary. The Swiss architect August Hardegger built the main building of the Salvatorkolleg between 1896 and 1906 in the style of historicism . The campanile- like tower and the two corner tower projections give the building a Mediterranean accent. The facility was used from 1896 to 1979 as a grammar school with a student dormitory or boarding school and is today a church educational center and meeting place. Since 1981 the boarding school for the students of the state vocational school for the hospitality industry in Lochau has been housed here. Used as a military hospital during the First World War, it was barracks from 1938 to 1945, most recently a collection camp for prisoners of war.
