Georg Haltmeyer

Georg Haltmeyer (born December 12, 1803 in Hörbranz ( Vorarlberg ), † October 29, 1867 in Vienna ) was an Austrian geoscientist and university director.

Life

Georg Haltmeyer first studied medicine and philosophy and received his doctorate in Vienna in 1835 (Dr. med.). He then worked as a university assistant at the mineralogical and zoological chair at the University of Vienna. He was a student of the mineralogist Friedrich Mohs (1773-1839). Regardless of his studies, he headed the mineralogical collection of the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz for over 20 years , and taught mineralogy and geognosy . In 1842 he was appointed professor in Graz, in 1843 as curator of the mineralogical collection of the Joanneum and in 1846 as deputy director of the Joanneum.

Georg Haltmeyer was appointed and appointed director of the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute (today Vienna University of Technology ) in 1858. After the drafting and approval of a statute under his leadership, the Polytechnic received freely elected rectors after his term of office. In 1866 he retired.
