history

The name Bildstein was first mentioned in a document in 1379. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). Bildstein has been its own parish since 1790. From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, during this time it became an independent political municipality. Since 1814 the place belongs to Austria again.

According to a record by Landammann Schneider from 1808, Bildstein had 831 inhabitants, 128 houses and 242 cows.

Until 1857, the official name of the community was "Steussberg", only then was the current community name Bildstein officially introduced. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Bildstein heard since the founding of the Vorarlberg Landtag 1861. The place was 1945-1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

The church

Pilgrimage Church of Maria Bildstein

This is an early baroque pilgrimage church ("To Our Lady Maria Visitation") designed by the Bregenz master builder Michael Kuen , which was built from 1662 to 1676.

The construction was funded by various foundations, including Field Marshal Count Maximilian Lorenz von Starhemberg . He was fatally wounded on September 7, 1689 during the battle for Mainz and succumbed to his injuries on September 17, 1689, whereupon he was buried in a crypt under the church on October 11, 1689.

In 1692 the double tower facade was built in the west and in 1838 the two towers were fitted with curved hoods by master carpenter Anton Böhler. The building can be seen as the most important Baroque building in Vorarlberg.

The flat facade of the church is emphasized by the two three-storey towers with their mighty basement, divided by corner blocks. The hall with the coffered ceiling is particularly remarkable .

Inside there are also various works by Franz and Jakob Bertle and the organ came in 1974 from the Rieger Orgelbau company in Schwarzach .

The interior was renovated between 1877 and 1879, and the church was completely restored in 1973/74.

In the two onion domes there is a 5-part special bronze bell that was cast by Oberascher in 1949 . It has the tone sequence: b ° - des '- f' - as '- b'. The big bell rings in the left tower, the others in the right.

Chapel of St. Michael

The Roman Catholic Chapel of St. Michael is in the Farnach district and is a listed building and dedicated to the Archangel Michael .

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2003 there were seven commercial enterprises with 13 employees and apprentices on site. There were 344 employees subject to wage tax
. Agriculture plays an important role. The proportion of agricultural land in the total area is 51.0%.

traffic

For many centuries, Bildstein was extremely poorly connected to the road network in the lower Rhine Valley. For a long time the only drivable road led from Rickenbach ( Wolfurt ) to the village center of Bildstein with a gradient of up to 25%. Sensitive or fragile goods had to be carried on foot to Bildstein because the road was in chronic need of repair and the community did not have the money to repair it. In 1905 the Bildstein municipal committee decided to renew and widen the street. The costs of an estimated 50,000  kroner should be paid for 25% by the municipality and 75% by the state of Vorarlberg. However, there was resistance to these plans in Bildstein itself and 70 community citizens are said to have signed a petition against these road construction plans (it later turned out that some signatures were falsified or were obtained by fraudulently using false information). The road construction plans were not implemented and in 1912 an older project came back into play, a road connection between Schwarzach and Bildstein. 30% of the estimated costs of 52,200 kroner should have come from Schwarzach and Bildstein, the rest from the state of Vorarlberg. This project also failed, among other things at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Today's Bildsteiner Straße from Wolfurt (Hofsteigstraße L 3) to Bildstein - Farnach - Alberschwende ( Bregenzerwaldstraße L 200) has not been fully developed for heavy goods traffic and has many bottlenecks.

education

In Bildstein there is a kindergarten and a school with (as of October 2005) 40 students.
