Bertle was a family of artists who provided a number of well-known painters and restorers in the 17th to 20th centuries. The family originally comes from Schruns in the Montafon, Austria .

Members

  1. Johannes Bertle (painter and farmer, 1756–1833)
  1. Josef Anton Bertle (painter and altar builder, 1796–1858)
  1. Franz Josef Bertle (painter, 1828–1883)
  2. Johann Jakob Bertle (painter, 1837–1901)
  1. Hans Bertle (Acad. Painter, 1880–1943)
  1. Hannes Bertle (1910–1978)

Six painters from five generations of the Bertle family, who originally lived in St. Gallenkirch and later settled in Schruns, determined the artistic landscape of the Montafon for a century and a half and even that of the entire state of Vorarlberg for decades.

In 1649 David Bertle , a forerunner of the famous Montafon family of artists, created the popular “Sebastian Altar” in the Renaissance style of the Church of St. Maria Magdalena in Gargellen .

Josef Anton Bertle (1796–1858), the actual founder of the artist family, then moved from St. Gallenkirch to Schruns. He was very much committed to the late baroque forms and the consideration of sacred themes is a focus in his work.

His sons Franz (1828–1883) and Jakob (1837–1911) were students of Melchior Paul von Deschwanden and, as painters of the Nazarene style , gained importance beyond the borders of Vorarlberg.

Hans (1880–1943), Jakob's son , who was born in Schruns , became the most famous representative of the artist family. Due to the favorable environment for artists, he settled in Munich for some time. His portraits, which helped him to get prominent commissions at the Bavarian royal court, were particularly famous. However, a special relationship with his homeland made him return to Schruns again and again. The ceiling pictures in the local parish church, many landscape and historical pictures as well as poster designs bear witness to his extensive work for the Montafon.

Son Hannes (1910–1978) continued the artistic tradition of his father - he was more connected to modern art movements.
