Hans Bertle saw the light of day on April 11, 1880 in Schruns in the Vorarlberg Montafon . He emerged from the marriage between Magdalena and Jakob Bertle and was one of five children from the same. Hans (actually Johann) was the oldest and at the same time the only one who continued the artistic tradition of the family, which shaped the artistic landscape of the Montafon for a century and a half and even that of the whole country for decades.

He attended elementary school in Schruns and in 1893 entered the high school in Einsiedeln , Switzerland , from which he graduated in 1897 with the Matura . Since there was no training center for art in Vorarlberg at that time, he then went to Munich, like many others , to be trained in the arts at the Munich Academy .

Stay in Munich

During his studies he traveled a. a. France and Italy . Above all, his stay in Rome in 1904 had a great artistic influence, which can be seen in the very Mediterranean painted landscapes.

Between 1905 and 1907 he designed the five large ceiling paintings and the ceiling paintings on the life of St. Jodok in the nave of the Schruns parish church .

In March 1907 he received the Silver Medal for Art and Science of the Kingdom of Bavaria for important achievements in the field of portrait painting . In 1909 he married Rosa Adam, who came from a well-known Munich artist family. In 1910 he was accepted as a full member of the Munich Artists 'Cooperative and the Munich Artists' Association "Ring". Two children, Hannes and Marie Antoinette, were born in 1910 and 1911 . A few years before the beginning of the First World War , he ran his own school for painting in Munich.

During the First World War

Hans Bertle volunteered in the German army in November 1914. In February 1915 he was awarded the Iron Cross for his service on the Western Front . After the Italians declared war on the Austrian Empire in May 1915, he moved to the southern front and joined the Standschützen . He was then awarded the Silver Medal for Bravery .

In 1917 he was appointed Standschützen lieutenant and war painter , because he created numerous pictures of events at the front during the war. He made dozens of postcards, but also paintings, most of which were of historical character . After the war and his discharge from the army, he received the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order and the Bertle family moved to Vienna.

After the First World War

In the years that followed, he traveled to Vorarlberg, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Milan for portraits. He designed a. a. the municipal coat of arms of Schruns. He also made 118 pen drawings in Felix Salten's book : Bambi, a life story from the forest.

Death and estate of Hans Bertle

On April 4, 1943, Hans Bertle died after a long period of suffering in his native Schruns, where he had retired due to his suffering. He left behind over 1,000 drawings, illustrations, portraits and war images.

reception

During wartime, the images were of great importance for war reporting and moral support for the native people. The enemy of the German soldiers is shown as surprised, lying on the ground, pleading and clearly inferior. Pictures with the designation "Germany everywhere" convey once again the efficiency and omnipresence of the German troops.

Conquest battles on z.
